The purpose of the Baby Signs® Program is to give babies a way to communicate before they can talk. It provides babies with the signs they can use most easily to express their needs, thoughts and feelings until they have words. The Baby Signs® Program is based on American Sign Language (ASL) with a few "baby-friendly" modifications to make them easier for babies to do.In the course of two decades of academic research, Drs. Acredolo and Goodwyn have uncovered a variety of ways in which babies and their caregivers benefit from using the Baby Signs® Program. 1. Reduces frustration and builds trust2. Allows babies to share their words3. Strengthens the parent-infant bond4. Reveals how smart babies really are5. Promotes positive emotional development6. Boosts babies' self -confidence7. Helps babies learn to talk8. Jumpstarts intellectual developmentScientific ResearchDr. Linda Acredolo and Dr. Susan Goodwyn have conducted over two decades of academic research on the use of sign language with hearing babies, including a long-term study funded by the National Institute of Health. Here are the results from that study.Twenty-four-month old signing babies were an average talking more like 27 - or 28-month olds, representing more than a three-month advantage over the non-signers. In addition, the babies who signed were putting together significantly longer sentences. 36 month old signers on an average were talking like 47 month olds, putting them almost a full year ahead of their average age-mates. Eight -year-olds who signed as babies scored an average of 12 points higher in IQ on the WISC-III than their non-signing peers.ConclusionThe Baby Signs® Program helps children develop both language and cognitive skills.Baby Signs® Classroom Kits, Self-Taught Day Care Center Baby Signs® Certification Program and Baby Signs® products available for Day Care Centers and Parents.
