Outbound TelemarketerTelemarketing Groups Oct 1990 - Feb 1994Southern CaliforniaStart of my Contact Center Journey! My father was laid off and to help the family I sought employment as an Outbound Telemarketer. Thinking I would do this until I graduated school, then find what I love to do best. Working with different companies, I sold some pretty cool products: - "Pop Rocks" and "Chupa Shops" Lolli pops B2B. I went to school in the AM and worked after school, contacting mom's and pop's stores, gas stations, specialty shops and grocery markets. - BIC ball point pens to offices nationwide- Long Distance Services B2C nationwide. This was the product that was more sustainable and consistent in terms of stability and profitability. I decided to stay in this Industry.Great Story: I was selling International Long Distance Service for AT&T. Should be easy right?The challenge: At that time, AT&T has 95% of the market, and the company leads were terrible. My objective were: 1) Find the 5% that were not with AT&T. This consumed 75% of my time. 2) Convince them to switch, which I did more often that not. The solution:Internet was very new so I took the bus to local libraries to research Telephone Directories. I looked for unique last names starting with names from Philippines (where I was born), thinking that they are more likely to be making International Calls. I was right, my closing rate increased significantly. Although I was reaching more non AT&T Customers. However, despite me being the first one in the office and last one to leave, I still spend a considerable amount of time talking to AT&T Customers. This limited my income potential.There has to be a better way!
