About Armelle Celarier
I am specializing as an experimental quantum physicist in the field of quantum computing. I want to contribute to the development of a fault-tolerant quantum processor.How did I get there ?My background is in sciences, with a multidisciplinary education. Learning about quantum physics and material science, I am interested by the interplay of the two and focused on condensed matter physics. I got the opportunity to join the research on simulation of materials at the quantum level. At that occasion, I heard about the exciting field of quantum computing. The material simulation requires heavy computation and a processor that has built-in quantum properties would be really useful ! Diving deeper during a master at EPFL, I chose to specialize in that field.Why am I so excited about developing a quantum processor ?Quantum processor are hardware equipment that leverage built-in quantum properties to solve faster, more accurately computational problems. Those problems range from drug discovery to material science, electric grid optimization and much more !To bring all the value a quantum processor can bring to high-performance computation, it needs to give a result without noise. This is currently one of the key issue the quantum hardware industry is trying to solve.Why do I believe superconducting cat-qubits are the best platform ?Because they are a versatile and scalable platform, superconducting circuits is one of the favorite platform to develop quantum computers. At Alice & Bob, we encode information in cat qubits, which offer built-in protection against one of the two types of errors that can happen in a quantum computer. I thus believe it is the best road to a fault-tolerant quantum computer !As an experimentalist, one study the very interesting quantum physics happening at the processor level, and leverage that to improve the performances of the chip. This is what I really like about my role.
