These awards provide monetary support to assist in the development of early career investigators and recognition of their accomplishments in areas of general endocrinology. Recipients will receive a $1,000 monetary award after presenting at ENDO, complimentary meeting registration, one-year of free membership to the Society, and public recognition of research accomplishments in various Society platforms.

Provided additional feedback on demographic categories and options for inclusion in the Endocrine Society Member Profile.Recommend underrepresented candidates for appointment to the Society's governance committees and leadership positions.Provided feedback on the diversity activities planned for the ENDO annual meeting. Future Leaders Advancing Research in Endocrinology (FLARE) program awarded a five-year renewal grant by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.Gave a presentation on their leadership model aimed at increasing diversity and inclusion in the biomedical sciences.They noted some of the barriers to the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority students (URM) in graduate programs and shared lessons learned from their two-year pilot of the program.ENDO Programming Further discussion focused on ENDO 2019 and ways to increase the diversity of speakers and topics related to minority health and health disparities in the meeting.Suggested: • Hold a town hall where members could propose topics and speakers • Incorporate a Meet-the-Professor session designed to allow attendees to raise issues around diversity in endocrinology into the program • Ask the Annual Meeting Steering Committee (AMSC) to achieve representation in the demographic data of ENDO chairs, symposia speakers, MTP sessions, and plenary speakers on an annual basis • Create a platform for junior faculty to share short video presentation of their science Submit suggestions for speaker and session topics for consideration by the AMSC.Elaborated on the idea of creating short videos to showcase the work and assess the presentation skills of junior faculty.

Many organizations and communities across the nation use COPE to work more effectively with low-income families. COPE gives participants and volunteers an opportunity to experience poverty firsthand through the eyes of real families.

Radiation Oncology Shadowing Experience

Cell culture/transfection/western training completed. Ran COIP for Flag-Mcl-1/Myc-Parkin overexpressing Hela cells. Parkin expresses well, detected Parkin bands on Western. Flag-Mcl-1 did not express well – very little pulled down in IP. Transfected Hela cells for Mcl-1/Drp1 COIP (see below). Mouse lines updated, sacking/weaning. Worked on abstract, powerpoint for capstone project. Literature review with cardiac physiology (Wigger’s diagram). Run COIP for Myc-Mcl-1/YFP-DRP1 overexpressing Hela cells and determine whether Myc construct expresses better in Helas (Myc construct is human). Overexpress Mcl-1 in Hela cells to determine if this facilitates fragmentation under basal/FCCP stress conditions. Microscope training for mitochondrial fragmentation study/imaging. Analyze Mcl-1 levels in WT, Parkin-/-, and Parkin TG hearts under stress and non-stress conditions.

Blocker Pre-Freshman Summer Scholars ProgramMorehouse CollegeAtlanta, GeorgiaProgram InformationDATES: Saturday, June 4th – Friday, July 15th, 2011HISTORY: Since its inception in 1974, the Morehouse College Health Careers Program has produced over 1000 physicians and 300 dentists.OVERVIEW: The Office of Health Professions at Morehouse College will conduct a rigorous six-week health careers summer program for pre-freshman who have been accepted and plan to attend Morehouse College in the fall of 2011. The major objectives of the program are to improve reading, writing, math, test taking and problem solving skills. In addition students will be exposed to concepts in biology and seminars covering health related topics.SPONSOR: Students and Parents ResponsibilityELIGIBILITY: High school male seniors who have been accepted and plan to enroll at Morehouse College in the fall of 2011. These students should have test scores of at least 1000/1600 on the old SAT or 1500/2400 on the new SAT, or 22 ACT score. In addition, applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and express an interest in a health career.HOUSING All participants are required to live on campus. CURRICULUM: Students will be involved in five courses that meet Monday through Friday. The courses are Mathematics (College Algebra, Pre-Calculus Calculus I), English 101, College Reading, General Biology, Public Health. There will also be seminars on College Adjustment, and the Contributions of African and African-Americans in Medicine and Science. Students may receive Morehouse College credit in English 101, College Reading, and mathematics if they earn grades of “B” or better. .
