  • Sun Microsystems
Principal Engineer / Communications Solutions / Global Expertise Center
    Sun Microsystems Feb 2007 - Mar 2007
On Friday 9th of February I was part of the 11 new Principal Engineers elected at Sun Microsystems, joining a special club of ~ 100 employees. This election acknowledged the work in solution architect role in particular for the 16 messaging and communications migrations in 11 years around the planet, for having lead the release of the Sun Groupware Migration Toolkit (SGMT), the mentoring of around 40 Sun and partner specialists world wide. As well the work on legal interception, convergent platforms in triple play environments, complex presales for certain big armies in the world, etc.
  • Sun Microsystems
Senior Solution Architect / Communications Solutions / Global Expertise Center
    Sun Microsystems Sep 2005 - Feb 2007
With success in delivery, I was promoted to the global presales for the field for Sun Microsystems for the Communications portfolio. In this position, I created the Comms Practice which regroups 350 people doing sales, presales, marketing, delivery, support, architecture and partner enablement to remove road blockers in their sales deals and develop IP work like the Sun Groupware Migration Toolkit (SGMT) as sales accelerator. This international position lead me to 100s of presales activities with deals from all over the planet on all market segments and on a vast variety of topics. I act as well as the link between the field and the product marketing and the engineering divisions. With now 11 years in the communications arena as architect, delivery and presales, from contributor to manager, I indeed start to have certain visions in this area.
  • Sun Microsystems
Senior Solution Architect / Messaging And Directory Specialist
    Sun Microsystems Sep 2000 - Sep 2005
During 5 years at Sun, I acted as EMEA and then Global Senior Solution Architect for the Sun Professional Services and Delivery team. In this mission I am the main field global architect for the Sun Communication Products and conducted many customer projects from small to extremely large deals, on all the industry verticals (corporate, government, academic, army, but primarily telco and OEM business). This covered all the areas of the communication platform, from architecture (many architecture workshop delivered), to basic installations, audits, escalations but of course many advanced solutions: unified messaging, convergent messaging, hosting, SLA, migrations (did 16 migrations in 11 years) from various sources (open source, Critical Path, Microsoft Exchange, etc.) to the Sun Communications Platform, Legal interception projects, etc.
  • Cern
Section Leader For The Messaging, Directory And Authentication/Authorization Team
    Cern Sep 1999 - Sep 2000
With the success of the MARCH project (which allowed to slash dramatically the manpower from 42 people to 3 staff to operate a platform for 20k users among which nearly 2000 users where accessing the service from various places including Caltech) I had to hire a total of 14 people and acted as team leader then became manager of the full section: 7 staff from 25 to 60+ years old engineers. That were as well my first approaches to personnal, interpersonnal and team management, to leadership, neural programming techniques, communication, project management, annual interviews, management situations and to develop my non technical skills under the direction of Master Jedi Judy Richards, having to face regularly management board about progresses on this long term consolidation and migration project.
  • Cern
Senior Solution Architect And Project Manager
    Cern Sep 1996 - Sep 1999
After several issues with the new IMAP service setup for only 1000 users, I took over a critical trip to the 2nd IMAP conference in the US and understood what was going wrong. Reorganizing the platform, killing the NFS model between the two nodes of the cluster and showing an improvement by a factor 10 in the behaviour was the beginning of taking over the so called MARCH (Mail ARCHitecture) team as technical leader. This was as well the beginning of the MARCH project that defined the migrations of 8 platforms (3090, VMSMail, AFSMail, QuickMail, MSMail and 3 NFS Mail cells) to a powerful IMAP platform that enabled up to the Netscape Mission Desktop which allowed true location independence (profile, addressbook, etc.) in the first LDAP server introduced at Sun. This platform was built on a scalable model that was rather unique based on CNAMEs allocations of users on the DNS at a time where Loadbalancors, LDAP servers, etc. were at their beginnings.
  • Cern
    Junior Architect
    Cern Sep 1995 - Nov 1996
During this period I was learning my architect role for the new messaging platform. CERN decided to move from LAN based messaging models to one of the first big IMAP messaging platform in Europe for 20k registered users. I learnt with master Jedi Dietrich Wiegandt the principles of a messaging platform and setup our first monolithic service on a DEC 2100 cluster.
  • Cern
    System Administrator
    Cern Sep 1993 - Sep 1995
My career started as System Administrator for CERN in the famous IT Division where Tim Berners Lee invented HTTP. One of my first job was actually to secretly offer NFS mounted disk spaces for Tim's group, in order to keep the HTTP logs for www0.cern.ch, the very FIRST public web server in the world as Tim and I where both under the direction of Chris Jones.Despite the anecdote, I was the assistant of Unix Migration Task Force to move away from the 3090 IBM machine migration to farms and clusters of UNIX platforms. I was the lead for the UNIX so called HEPiX (High Energy Physics) scripts, a set of UNIX and later on X11 configurations that allows HEP physicists to find an homogeneous environment accross all labs including respecting the site level, group level down to personal level settings. This was my first international project that took 2 years to deliver a package that was consistent for 10 UNIX vendors systems at that time.
