Computer performance is a dynamic field, and one that I'm excited to be a part of. While performance continues to improve with every new generation of hardware, customer applications continue to drive new requirements for scalability and improved response time. This brings constant new challenges and opportunities for performance analysis and improvement.My recent work has been focused on performance of a set of cloud microservices providing a REST API for analysis of medical text, using natural language processing (NLP). During my time on this team I have had opportunities to make significant improvements to both scalability and response time. I have previously worked with a variety of applications and benchmarks written mostly in Java and Python, but with components in C/C++ and other languages.Understanding performance requires good workloads, which is why I'm proud of the work I have done with SPEC. I've learned a lot from my colleagues at SPEC about creating industry standard benchmarks which are relevant and fair, produce verifiable and reproducible results, and which are easy to use for a variety of purposes. As the architect for the SPEC power committee I've put these skills to use in the development of benchmarks and tools to measure the energy efficiency of servers. Through my time on the SPEC Board of Directors I've been able to help ensure that SPEC continues to meet the high standards that the industry expects from us.Of course, industry standard benchmarks aren't the solution for every performance analysis, but these same principles for benchmark design apply to internally-developed workloads as well. I enjoy the challenge of taking a new application, identifying the performance-sensitive use cases, designing a test to exercise those use cases, then analyzing the results to determine whether or not we are meeting performance requirements, and finally determining what can be done to make it faster.Technical Skills:► Programming Languages: Java, Python, C/C++, Perl, R, JavaScript, shell► Operating Systems: Linux, macOS, Windows, IBM i, AIX► Markup: HTML, XML, XSLT, LaTeX► Other: Kubernetes, Docker, OpenStack, IBM WebSphere Application Server, Apache JMeter, Relational and NoSQL databasesI'm currently available to discuss new opportunities, including remote work or possible relocation.
