About Arnold Blinn

When I was growing up in Pennsylvania I always wanted to be an architect. Someone who designs buildings or bridges. At the age of 13 the first personal computers were arriving on the market. Somehow I managed to convince my parents, who owned and operated a small retail business, that I should have one. I was instantly hooked, teaching myself how to program and attending a few college classes while in high school.Off to Carnegie Mellon University I went, and after four years I moved out west and haven't looked back since. After 35 plus years I've transitioned to part tume advising. I feel blessed to have worked on a diverse set of problems with many talented people, doing what I love. Fast forward to today. I guess I became an architect after all. Just a software one.My specialties focus on how large scale web services fit together to meet customer needs. Having deep technical skills along with a strong customer empathy allows me to enable high impact capabilities, often with simple changes.Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family traveling, skiing, and biking.

Good science built AAA Kinect based games including Kinect Adventures, Kinect Star Wars, and next generational entertainment experiences.I managed KinectShare. This is a service for managing and storing user generated content that is used by all of Microsoft Studios.I also ran a small incubation team that was exploring next generation gaming technology and interactive entertainment scenarios. These teams each ranged from 6 – 16 people working on gaming clients, services, incubation, and new experiences. • Microsoft
Partner Architect/Manager, Windows Live Platform Incubation Team
    Microsoft Jan 2005 - Feb 2009
    Redmond, Washington, Us
While in my role as MSN/Windows Live Architect I started a team to build new products and services which leveraged, tested, and validated (or extend) the underlying platform. As these products evolved they were either killed or spun into other product groups. This work allowed me to serve the dual purposes shipping real customer solutions while influencing and helping to architect the underlying platform. Products included:• Windows Live Custom Domains, an award winning service that allows domain owners to host their mail for free on the Windows Live Platform. It eventually became the main engine behind Windows Live @edu, and was copied by Google and became Google Apps. It was eventually merged with O365.• MSLiveLabs, a platform to rapidly deploy and host applications and services. This service was used by hundreds of internal teams wishing to build and deploy hosted services for tests, betas, demos, and in some cases production services. It existed several years prior to the Azure effort, and some of the technology and people was eventually spun into Azure.• Windows Live DNS, an internal service for running large scale DNS as a service. • Distribution List Engine, an internal service used by Windows Live Groups and others for management of e-mail• Windows Live Frame It, a consumer web site for serving images to electronic picture frames• StartKey, software running on USB storage devices to perform strong authentication and data synchronization• Prototypes of a FeedSync Server, an experimental protocol behind the Windows Live Mesh architecture (working with the CTO team)• Several new consumer productivity applications on top of the Windows Live Mesh
  • Microsoft
Partner Architect, Integration Team, Windows Live/Msn
    Microsoft Jan 2001 - Feb 2009
    Redmond, Washington, Us
I was the Integration Architect for MSN (and what later became Windows Live). The services included Windows Live Id, ABCH (Address Book Clearing House), Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger, Billing, Groups, and dozens of other client and server groups. I reported directly to the division Vice President in this function. My primary role was the coordination of divisional architectural issues across all teams. This resulted in managing tradeoffs between long term architecture, time to market, and business requirements. It also involved working with multiple teams on complex problems, a great deal of consensus building, technical understanding of complex issues, and multi-tasking. Prior to this role MSN was a set of disjoint and independent web properties with no common architecture or shared services.
  • Microsoft
    Partner Architect/Development Manager, Msn Shopping
    Microsoft Jan 1999 - Jan 2001
    Redmond, Washington, Us
I was the initial member of the MSN Shopping group, defining the product vision, business model, architecture, feature set, UI, etc. The team eventually grew to 80 people and was responsible for millions of dollars of revenue in MSN. As the team grew, I remained the development manager and architect.During this tenure I shipped five versions of this product in two and a half years. We were highly agile, with continuous deployment and practices. As MSN as a service grew, more technology was being developed to integrate the network. I discovered during this time that I had a skill for understanding, prototyping, and improving cross team initiatives during these early days of integration of MSN. At this point the division asked me to do this full time as a job.

Each subsequent version was integrated deeper into the NT architecture, including ASP, COM, C#, and SQL*Server.
  • Ink Development, Eshop Inc.
    Architect/Founder
Ink Development, Eshop Inc. May 1991 - Jun 1996
I was founder and primary product architect. The company was venture funded and ultimately grew to approximately 30 people.Initially the company started developing applications for the PenPoint operating system. Initial products were Note-taking and Image Processing applications. The focus of the company shifted several times as the market changed, shifting first to application development for Pen Windows, then next to application development on General Magic's PDA. The initial applications for General Magic involved electronic shopping for software, and eventually the entire company was focused on the more general problem of electronic shopping. At this point the company built a client/server solution for electronic shopping on Windows 3.1. This application used TCP/IP and dial up to connect to a server. Stores were authored with a custom tool and stored in the server, and scenes downloaded and rendered onto the client where the customer would buy products and upload orders back to the server. The scenes were rich and graphical containing mainly 2D art (vectors, images, text). In 1995 we launched eShop Plaza, a free online shopping service that featured multiple merchants (Tower Records, Spiegal Catalog, Avon, and several others). The business model was free access for the consumer (at the time all dial up access cost money), with merchants paying us a commission. These products were all fully localized into both 8 bit and 16 bit languages. As the web browsers made their appearance in 1995, the server was converted to an HTML based server. The company was sold to Microsoft in June of 1996 as the basis of Microsoft Commerce Server.
  • Go Corporation
    Senior Engineer
    Go Corporation Jan 1990 - May 1991
I worked on and implemented GUI based elements of Pen Based operating system. Much of the core innovation here was building an interface that could respond to pen (very similar to touch today), and could adapt to multiple screen sizes and orientations (automatic layout).
  • Oracle
    Lead, Sql*Forms
    Oracle Aug 1987 - Jan 1990
I worked on a 4GL forms product (SQL*Forms) adding graphically oriented features (windows, alerts, rich controls) and cross platform support. The underlying framework was built using Object Oriented programming techniques (at the time, this was a very new concept) and engineered to run across multiple platforms. These platforms included 3270 and VT100 terminals all the way to graphical systems utilizing windowing and a mouse.
