About Arno Stassen

After over 15 years of working in Technology, II feel comfortable with calling myself an all-round specialist. Five years as scientist/consultant and 10 years as technologist/business developer/CTO has brought be into close contact with scientists, manufacturers, operators, sales persons, governments and everybody else working within the value chain. My experience in renewable energy, plastic electronics, ceramics, electrochemistry and many more field help me with identifying new possibilities.Being a natural sponge and as curious as can be, I learn something new from every conversation or meeting. And each little piece of the picture helps me with one of my strongest assets: the ability to connect the dots before all facts are known and identifying new opportunities.Living and working on three different continents has shown me that I am flexible, that I easily adapt to new circumstances and always make the best of a situation.     Sol Voltaics has developed a new method to grow low-cost nanowires and a technology to align nanowires/tubes in close packing to form a film. These new technologies can be applied in multiple fields.Topics under evaluation are:- Solar energy: making solar cells with GaAs nanowires. GaAs is the best solar material available with a world record close to 30%. This material only absorbs a part of the light, which means it can be tack on top of a silicon solar cell. The efficiency of the resulting tandem could be as high at 35%.- Lighting: Nanowires can be excellent light emitting diodes for solid state lighting. Aerotaxy nanowires and alignment would enable large-area low-cost Solid-State Lighting.- Batteries: silicon nanowires can survive the absorption and release of lithium much better than bulk silicon. The resulting product can be a battery with a high power-density, long lifetime, reduced heating during charging and controlled swelling- Sensors: nanowire-based bio-sensors can have an increase in signal of 500% to 2000% and an improved difference between signal and background. Aerotaxy and alignment can make the fabrication of nanowire-based sensors affordable.- Thermal Interface Materials: highly conducting nanowires or tubes (e.g. canon nanotubes) can be aligned and formed into a film with a higher thermal conductivity than anything currently on the market. The resulting product could act as a thermal interface layer between e.g. CPU’s (computer chips) and heat sinks.My responsibility at Sol Voltaics are - Representing Sol Voltaics in the technical, financial and scientific communities- Developing new concepts and product areas for the revolutionary processes- Setting the overall strategie and timeline- Determining full production models for the potential products- Determining market expectation and align our processes to them- Developing cost and price models for potential products.

    As the PV industry is still young and quickly changing, keeping in close touch with international research to identify threats and opportunities is essential.My job was to scout for new technology (mainly in the area of metallization of silicon solar cells), evaluate this technology and advice on how to adapt our strategy. Next to scouting, I assisted the R&D group, technical service, sales department and management with answering questions, varying from explaining measurement results to analyzing market developments.By visiting conferences, trade shows, partners and customers and presenting our results and vision I was able to extend my network and remain up to date with all developments.

    As project manager I was responsible for several large internal and external R&D programs in the area of crystalline silicon solar cells. Topics were: wet chemical processes (etching and cleaning), optimization of single process steps and full process integration. As project leader, the ECN baseline process was improved by >1.5% abs within two years’ time, making it ahead of industry standard instead of following it.The work resulted in multiple publications, presentations and patents.As consultant I gave lectures within the Solar Academy, performed line audits to identify possible areas of improvement and transferred knowledge on new production processes, for instance for MWT (metal wrap through).

The goal was to use this information to design new organic semiconductors with specific properties. This work was performed by myself and by several PhD. and master students whom I helped in their research.Results of this work were published in scientific journals, presented at conferences and resulted in a patent application together with an industrial partner.
