About Alexander Roskov

My name is Alexander Roskov and I am currently studying at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, working towards a Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering and a minor in Sustainability, Energy, and Environment. I believe everyone has the right to access safe and efficient public transportation whether it be through aviation, railways or buses which is why I’m looking forward to a career in Transportation Engineering. While my undergraduate education will equip me with Aeronautical Engineering knowledge, I'm looking forward to continuing my graduate studies in Civil Engineering with a Transportation concentration. My specific areas of interest include alternative/sustainable fuel sources (like hydrogen fuel cells), passenger railways and incident investigation.

While my primary role is to teach material that is provided to me through active learning, based on my recent experiences in their shoes I can better adapt the lessons to highlight experiences that I went through or saw my peers go through. I aim to encourage them on their educational journeys through both realistic and honest, group and individual discussions about aerospace engineering student life at UIUC. Show less

We are currently creating a blended wing body aircraft powered via a novel compressor and nozzle design. My work has been centered on this thruster design where I have completed literature reviews to investigate airflow attributes of impellers and designed three impeller prototypes in Autodesk Inventor. I had brief experience with trying to learn Ansys Fluent to conduct CFD simulations on our compressor's designs, however these didn't progress due to personal time constraints. I'm currently working on researching concepts and design functionality of nozzles to incorporate on our future prototype. Show less

I joined RailTEC (Rail Transportation and Engineering Center) as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in June 2023. My first summer consisted of working on a UTP evaluation project to determine the reduction in maintenance costs seen between two different UTP and a non-UTP track. Here I used geometry car data in Excel and Python to analyse (through graphing and TQI calculation) the change in surface, alignment and elevation metrics over time for the three different sections. Here I used geometry car data in Excel and Python to analyse (through graphing and TQI calculation) the change in surface, alignment and elevation metrics over time for the three different sections. In coordination with my graduate student, I conducted a literature review to select (and then partially implement) a degradation prediction model for us to use for the maintenance cost aspect of the project. Over the following academic year I would pickup assorted jobs given by other graduate students since I was balancing academic coursework - these typically involved data analysis. In Summer 2024 I was moved to take on a more leading role on a project involving the evaluation of UTP effect on wheel-rail interaction at an RBM frog. Here I learned VI-Rail (which uses the Adams multibody simulation software) to implement five revenue service wheel profiles and helped modify the track to implement our frog. Along with this, I headed a 2-day summer camp engaging 23 high school students in railroad engineering and I inventoried the RailTEC student office desktops to create and follow through on individualised upgrade plans for each student's desktop.
