Represent the labor union in various matters before Congress, the Executive Branch, as well as various rail stakeholder and labor groups. Develop and execute advocacy strategies on various issues for TCU's various railroad crafts. Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, and compose comments as necessary. Advise and manage political decisions for the union, including managing PAC distributions. Write speeches and assemble presentations for TCU principals on various issues.Draft and publish communications for TCU’s website/blog, as well as social media accounts.

Drafted informed copy materials for a large education association representing 95,000 members nationwide. Developed Media Training program as an additional product to offer membership. Materials included press releases, articles, blog posts, social media content, and op-ed development.

Research and construct political communications materials covering the Northeast and Southern regions for the AFL-CIO’s targeted states, including high-profile races in Kentucky, Florida, Massachusetts, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Maine and New Hampshire.Political communications materials include fliers, local union letters, newsletter articles, fact sheets and phone scripts on candidates and legislative priorities.Help lead interdepartmental meetings on these states and races to correctly construct a salient message based on the region’s demographics, industries, and membership.Work closely with state federations and affiliates to coordinate the content and timing of messaging and materials.

Represent CWA in legislative meetings on Capitol Hill, before the Administration, and various inter-organizational meetings. Assist Legislative Director with advocacy efforts on various issues impacting CWA’s membership. Organize, administer and escort CWA membership for lobby days on impending issues. Draft position letters on legislative issues such as trade, budget, defense, telecom, finance, labor, tax, transportation and immigration. Provide analysis of important legislative issues to President Larry Cohen, the legislative staff, and many external parties. Draft bi-weekly Legislative Dept. Newsletter for our political activists in the field. Maintain advocacy lists of Members in supporting various bills, letters, and initiatives. Provide support for the legislative department in communications and grassroots organizing.

I was asked by my friend, Ted Henderson, to help with outreach and organizing for the Indiegogo campaign he started to fund further develpment of the Capitol Bells mobile app. The app was somewhat known on the Hill before we launched the IndieGoGo campaign but its visibility exploded when we managed to secure articles in the Washington Post, Roll Call, MSNBC (print and TV), Politico’s Playbook (a shout out from Mike Allen), and others. I’m really proud of both the app and the coverage we generated during the campaign and it’s only expanded since then.

Analyzed and recommended trade and currency legislation to policy staff and board members. Conducted legislative and industry research on various topics for an active government affairs staff. Represented AAM in meetings between working group coalition members (USW, Arcelor Mittal, U.S. Steel). Attended, blogged and ‘tweeted’ on congressional hearings, briefings, and summits for the AAM blog and Communications Department.

Prepared and organized Democratic Caucus meetings and briefing materials for 193 members of Congress and high-level staff. Materials and meetings varied by week and included labor organization leaders, White House officials, and private sector advisors. Assisted policy staff by attending hearings and briefings on current debate topics. Drafted official correspondence from the Chairman to prominent public and private sector officials. Provided administrative support in the front office; including answering constituent phone calls, and providing legislative updates

Aided the legislative staff in political and legal research, co-sponsor solicitation, and maintenance of caucus lists. Assisted in front office management which included directing phone calls, greeting guests, drafting constituent correspondence, scheduling tours, and submitting flag requests. Attended and summarized congressional briefings and committee hearings on topics such as healthcare and the 1099 requirement, EPA and NSF funding, the proposed South Korea FTA, and telecom policy.
