My first 10 years were with the AP Moller Maersk group where I joined as a management trainee straight out of B-school. I know very few who don’t share a smile reminiscing of their experiences with this truly global company. My next 10 years were in the wilderness searching for true purpose, experimenting in the sun and finding shade whenever I ran out of breath. Through consulting engagements in tourism, ports & free zone, automotive, software and IT services, airports, packaged food products and direct investments in education & hospitality ventures, what I really managed to do besides the broad exposure and sharpening of management skills was to diversify my income sources. And therefore not depend on traditional employment for survival. I enter the next 10 years with a fundamental realisation from the last decade - I have taken some risks in my life, but I didn’t have the courage to take the risks required for scale. You have to put everything on the line at some point without any guarantees of success. When I meet a successful entrepreneur, I see with admiration a person who chose to keep walking through that dark tunnel. Scaling is a whole different ball game and that’s what I am working on now.
