  • Ministry Of Health New Zealand
    Policy Manager
Ministry Of Health New Zealand 1998 - 2000
This was the time of "matrix management" in the policy area of the Ministry of Health. I was responsible for a team of 20 analysts and professional advisors (eg. nurse, doctor, clinical psychologist, disability and Maori advisors). They were assigned to specific projects and areas of work under the designation of other policy managers.
  • Ministry Of Health New Zealand
    Strategic Projects Leader
Ministry Of Health New Zealand 1996 - 1998
In this role, I got to lead and participate in some very interesting, complex and significant projects for the Ministry. Projects such as the then Minister of Health Bill English's directed project; Identification and promotion of best practice in crown health enterprises.
  • Acc
    Senior Policy Analyst
    Acc 1992 - 1995
I arrived at ACC to work in a newly formed policy group. The new legislation meant lots of work on regulations and policies. I led a team of young analysts with a heap of talent, enthusiasm and attitude!
  • Ministry Of Health New Zealand
    Nurse Advisor
Ministry Of Health New Zealand Jan 1989 - 1992
It was my role to review the Nurses Act 1977 and also work on the Nurses Amendment Act 1990 that gave midwives autonomy to practice independently. I also contributed to the Working Group on Occupational Regulation and the World Health Organisation and International Council of Nurses Regulation of Nursing programme.
  • Royal Institute Of Public Administration Consultancy Services (Uk)
    Management Consultant
Royal Institute Of Public Administration Consultancy Services (Uk) 1987 - 1988
    Reading, United Kingdom
I worked for RIPACs for about 9 months whilst living in the UK. They undertook operational research mainly for local government and health authorities. I was hired to work primarily on health projects. My main project was the review of community midwifery services in Newham, East London.
  • Palmerston North Hospital Board
    Staff Nurse
    Palmerston North Hospital Board 1986 - 1987
    Palmerston North
I worked part time in the orthopaedic ward at Palmerston North Hospital whilst I studied full time as Massey University.
  • Hutt Hospital
    Staff Nurse
    Hutt Hospital 1984 - 1985
    Lower Hutt
I mainly worked in orthopaedics and a little of acute medical work. I loved orthopaedic nursing. People were basically well. They just had broken bones or needed new joints. I found that my mental health nursing was invaluable as I cared for teenagers who were experiencing more than broken bones as a result of motor bike accidents or drunk driving incidents that led to the death of their best friends.
  • Wellington Hospital Board
    Staff Nurse
    Wellington Hospital Board 1983 - 1984
    Porirua Hospital
My first job as a registered nurse was in a psychiatric hospital. I was assigned to a Villa 7, a ward for women who were long term residents. I also worked in an outpatient phobia clinic. Although I chose to work here, I found the first few months very tough. I wondered what of my nursing education was really needed for the type of work I was doing. My friends working in general hospitals were marking off milestones like doing their first catherisation. What was I doing?? And then after a few months I realised that I had learnt the best lesson of all. As I got to know the women residents, l realised I could tell when they were becoming more agitated, and I could intervene to avoid a more drastic situation later on. I learnt that it was my assessment was the therapeutic difference. A wonderful lesson for a newly graduated nurse to learn.
