About Artemis Bear
I'm a start up founder, movement builder, project manager and culture change strategist. With an undergraduate degree in electronic engineering, my background - and postgraduate degree - is in environmental policy and strategy but since becoming a parent, education and culture change has become the focus of my intellectual curiosity. I'm especially interested in the link between how we treat children and all systems of oppression, including environmental devastation. We need to create a new ground up way of making decisions as a society if we are to have a hope of a sustainable future. I founded The Garden in 2016, to create a self-directed learning community for my children as well as the many local families who sought a collective, rights-respecting educational experience. It has also been a hugely successful experiment in developing the tools for a less hierarchical and adversarial society, which I'm keen to take the learning from into other areas.I now also work for Phoenix Education Trust, as Head of Freedom to Learn, which promotes freedom, autonomy and social justice in education. This programme supports a culture change movement through a UK and international network, online and in person events and policy work.
