Arthur trained as a geologist, working for the British Geological Survey for some yeras before starting a career as a cement and concrete scientist working first in Blue Circle's Research laboratory (subsequently Lafarge), then advising on the manufacture and use of cement for major companies and major construction projects such as the Hong Kong bridges and Heathrow Express rail link for Mott MacDonald. He has also been Chief Chemist at Rugby Cement (now part of CEMEX), and has spent several years advising and acting as Technical Manager and Process Manager at Tunstead Cement Plant in Derbyshire.He now operates from his base in North Wales where he has a microscope laboratory and undertakes technical and microscopic analysis for cement plants around the world as well as providing advice and technical assistance on the use of alternative fuels and raw materials and assessments of potential raw materials sources.In the past few years he has been a member of teams carrying out Due Diligence work connected with the purchase of cement companies in which he has advised on raw materials reserves and quality and also potential clinker raw mix designs.
