Appleton, J.D., Ph.D. leads Appleton Luff – International Lawyers a boutique international trade, investment and arbitration firm with offices in Brussels, Geneva, Gibraltar, Istanbul, Kampala, Paris, Silicon Valley, Singapore, Warsaw and Washington, D.C. Dr. Appleton has 35 years of experience in the trade and investment field dating back to the late 1980s when he advised a prominent Asian country during the Uruguay Round negotiations. Previously he served as Counsel at White & Case and Of Counsel at Lalive & Partners. He works with international businesses, sovereign States, international organizations and non-governmental organizations on all aspects of international trade, as well as investment and arbitration matters. His work has taken him to 70 countries, including a large number of developing countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Dr. Appleton has worked as a consultant for many organizations, including the WTO, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, UNCTAD, ITC, UNITAR, CLDP (US Department of Commerce), WTI/SECO, COMESA and the ACP Secretariat (the last two on EU-funded projects). He has led and managed many major contracts. In July/August 2006 he served as a Counselor in the Trade and Environment Division of the WTO Secretariat on a short-term contract. Dr Appleton is listed by the EU as a potential Chairperson for Arbitrations and for Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD) Expert Panel Proceedings (17 May 2022). He is also on the List of Experts (potential Chairperson) for Trade and Sustainable Development disputes under the following EU FTAs: (1) EU-Colombia-Peru Trade Agreement (2) Association Agreement between the EU and Central America; (3) EU-Moldova Association Agreement; (4) EU-Georgia Association Agreement (5) Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union, (6) Agreement Between the European Union and Japan for an Economic Partnership.
