I have been contracting since 2006. While I have held a couple employee positions, I have maintained at least one regular contract since 2006 and have worked with former employers on projects as funding and opportunities became available. I am able to work with a client to identify a target application and aid in the design, development, and implementation, and documentation of the software as necessary. I try to consider a client's short and long term requirements and attempt to provide them solutions that do not require long-term maintenance. I largely followed the evolution of Adobe products from Macromedia Director through to Adobe Flex. I am of course fluent in HTML and JavaScritpt and can create jqueryui widgets and leverage jquery for communiting with REST services which I am also capable of creating (especially in PHP). I've aided others in determining how to work with WordPress and have created a very simple shortcode for wordpress. I've also leveraged PHP+flex for creating a facebook plugin. However, my major accomplishment as an independent contractor is SimpleLayers, formerly Cartograph.com, where I retain the title of Chief Technology Officer and have maintained an active interest in serving maps and solving community mapping issues including data sovereignty, data discovery, and data delivery.

SimpleLayers.com is an online tool for sharing map data layers. It is where I've honed my understanding of the need of digital sovereignty. Members of the SimpleLayers community are from small municipalities that have a need to steward their data and share what they want to the degree they are comfortable. I started at SimpleLayers as a flash developer helping to build the first flash-based map viewer for the platform, eventually adapted that viewer to a flex-based app, as well as working with the PHP + Smarty based back-end development. I also serve as system administrator and am helping evolve the product to a more scalable cloud based architecture. SimpleLayers is a long-term independent contract I have maintained while in the service of a couple different full-time positions. I've noted a trend in people around my age to maintain a project they are passionate about in addition to one or more jobs they are paid to do; this is mine.

REST-ful API and client design and development for integrating a Learning Management System (LMS) as a learning management subsystem to drive assignment and grading interfaces in primary company products. Aided in movement toward internationalization (i18n) efforts. Discussed/consulted with the CTO regarding approaches to LMS integration. Aided the CTO as needed in communicating systems to other members of the organization. Provided some support for software documentation.

Responsible for assisting with development of both back end (e.g. stored procedures within a database) and front end (e.g. interface) aspects of the project. Develop and maintains technical and end-user documentation for software projects."Leveraged several systems/APIs including ePals LearningSpace, Survey-Monkey, Google Sites, a custom Flex App widget, mySQL and MS SQLServer databases, PHP and C#, Adobe Flex and a custom REST API (in php and c#) to facilitate a test environment for attempting to provide an online curriculum workflow that included incentivized pre and post surveys and collected sufficient metrics to determine whether the curriculum was effective. Also provided technical support to participating teachers.

Advised/consulted with the president of the organization as to technologies to explore/purchase and general technical decisions. The New Media Studio (TNMS) started as a partner organization with Planet Earth Science and my time was split between the two companies. TNMS continued the game development started at PES and also produced some interfaces to scientific datasets.

Aided in the development of multimedia educational games developed in the Macromedia Director platform. This included assisting in the development of behaviors that worked with a plugin the company had developed for interacting with the Interactive Data Language (IDL). This allowed us to dynamically display different scientific datasets in order to educate students about the data behind environmental issues affecting our lives.

While finishing a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and after graduation, worked on a project for the Department of Anthropology involving serving maps for web-based exercise in a GIS for Archaeologists course taught by Dr. Mark Aldenderfer, it was for this and an Excel macro I made for the department which aided in simplifying accounting tasks that I earned an Award of Distinction for contributions to the department. The work I did for Dr. Aldenderfer culminated in a paper I delivered at an ESRI User conference. Also worked in the Germanic, Slavic, and Semetic studies department on a web-based application called NetLearn for Dr. Dorothy Chun who was researching the usage of multimedia web elements and tracking how students utilized various features to determine efficacy of hypermedia in language learning. My contribution included the implementation of javascript based tracking of user action and the usage of hidden frames to send xml to a server for storing user actions to a database; a less impressive impressive claim now; however, note the timeframe.
