I am a third-year PhD student, research assistant, and former university instructor passionate about understanding mental health and mental disability. My doctoral research focuses on language use and brain function in people of bilingual backgrounds living with schizophrenia or autism. After defending my dissertation, I plan to build this budding research program into an academic career. Over the course of my PhD, I am acquiring a range of skills in neuroimaging, programming, and data analysis as well as increasing my knowledge of clinical research by working with a co-supervisor at Ottawa’s Royal Mental Health Centre. Working part-time as an instructor and as a teaching assistant has helped me improve my communication and leadership skills to prepare me to assume greater responsibilities.In addition, I have gained a broad range of transferable professional skills working for the Canadian government, as an English teacher in Korea, as a research assistant in the non-profit sector, and at a small landscaping firm. Before my current studies in cognitive science, I did research in international development on the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, giving me a broader perspective on the social context of my current field.
