We won the first civil RICO case tried in Illinois, the first case tried under the Illinois Trade Secrets Act, and a $32 million verdict in the first lawsuit tried under the U.S. Antidumping Act.

I joined Schopf & Weiss as its first lateral attorney when the firm was only four attorneys and less than a year old. The biggest transformation in the legal professional during my career has been the growth of larger and larger regional, then national, and now global full-service law firms. Early in my career I decided to tack in the opposite direction by joining a boutique of bright lawyers who practice exclusively in business and corporate litigation. I believed then, and still believe now, that while bigger is good, smarter is better.

Following my Seventh Circuit clerkship, I joined Jenner & Block as a litigation associate. There I wrote my first briefs, argued my first motions, and took my first depositions.

After graduating from Duke Law School, I clerked with the Hon. Jesse E. Eschbach. Judge Eschbach had served for more than two decades as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana before becoming a Circuit Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. What I valued most was observing how Judge Eschbach viewed cases from his perspective as both a trial and appellate judge, an experience that sharpened my written and oral advocacy skills.

Jones Day gave me my first job in the legal field, albeit as a summer associate after my first year of law school. It was during that summer in the Cleveland office that I decided to pursue business and corporate litigation as a career. I liked the intellectual challenge of being an advocate on behalf of a client, which I continue to enjoy today.

I served as a legislative intern in the Washington, D.C. office of Senator Dan Quayle (Rep., Indiana). I drafted correspondence with constituents and researched legislative proposals.
