Developing CRISPR tools for multiplex genome editing of cyanobacteria and molecular tools for eukaryotic microalgae. Isolated a novel cyanobacterial strain with a high industrial potential and engineered it to produce free fatty acids. Developed a growth media formulation for increasing growth rate and biomass accumulation to highest densities reported that time. Used a directed evolution approach to overcome cobalamin auxotrophy in the isolated strain.

Pioneer work on engineering cyanobacteria to express plant cytochrome P450-dependent pathways and produce tyrosine-derived glucosides and intermediates of the vanilla flavour pathway from CO2 and water. Developing synthetic biology tools, testing small scale photobioreactor setups and screening enzymatic activity both in vitro and in vivo. Several lab exchanges across Germany (FAME analysis) and Finland (proteomics) as part of PHOTO.COMM European Research Project.

Expressed and purified human recombinant proteins for crystallographic studies. Investigated unconventional nucleoside modifications in tRNAs and tested their stability towards specific enzymes.
