DirectorSusan'S Battle Jan 2014 - PresentMaple Ridge, BcSusan's Battle is a family driven lobbying effort to have governments do more to reduce the continuing addiction of too many young Canadians to nicotine. 40,000 annual Canadian deaths are related to smoking and each year nicotine addiction costs the Canadian economy $10 billion. Our key recommendations are to:1. Implement an immediate moratorium on new tobacco and e-cigarette licences.2. For existing tobacco and e-cigarette retailers implement an annual licence fee of $1,000 to cover the costs of compliance audits.3. Gradually raise the age to purchase tobacco and e-cigarettes to 25.4. Implement a regulation that those selling tobacco and e-cigarettes must be at legal age to purchase tobacco and e-cigarettes.It is well known that nicotine addiction leads to many deadly health consequences, including lung cancer. Recent research has demonstrated that nicotine addiction also primes the brain to addiction of other substances by changing the molecular structure of the brain. There is also a multi-generational impact where the nicotine addiction of grandparents and parents can result in ADHD development in children. So who is being targeted to ensure continued use of tobacco and nicotine. Our youth. Stats show that 90% of smokers start smoking before age 19, 99% before age 25. Studies of the human brain show that our brains are most vulnerable to addiction before the brain fully develops around age 25.Tobacco retailers who continue to provide lax or non-existent enforcement of tobacco sales regulations are supporting the tobacco industries drive for continued nicotine addiction. Recent Health Canada surveys report that 28% of youth smokers under age 19 buy tobacco directly from retailers. 46% of youth smokers between ages 15 and 18 buy tobacco directly from retailers. And 80% of smokers, under 15, get their tobacco from 15 to 18 year olds. Retailers have had almost 100 years to get to full compliance - the facts are that retailer compliance is getting worse.
