Profile bio

About W. A. "Art" Wharton Iii

Upon graduating with my BSME at the University of Texas at Austin, I took an oath called The Obligation of the Engineer. I swore in that oath to serve humanity through “making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.” In fulfillment of my oath and my obligation, I have an intense focus for my career to contribute to the advancement and implementation of nuclear science and technology to benefit society. I have a personal drive for value and profit, with an edge of philanthropy.I have experience spanning most areas of the nuclear energy industry from the vendor perspective. My experience began as a nuclear reactor core designer, project and programmatic risk management for AP1000 projects and product management, along with applications of database technology to manage complex information and workflows. That basis of contributor-level work served me well in moving toward project management and business development for customers who are/were considering >$10 Billion investments in advanced nuclear power plant technology within the next decade. I have also led or served as Project Manager for multiple corporate strategy projects aimed at corporate-wide transformations including corporate process standardization, business growth exceeding $300M, and leaner operations. I currently serve as President of Studsvik Scandpower where I am accountable for the management of global operations of four entities and 45 employees across 6 different countries.I have served in multiple divisions/committees in the American Nuclear Society as a personal good-faith effort to advance the profession outside the typical boundaries of my day-to-day job. I most recently held the position of Treasurer for the Society for a full term limit under the bylaws. In other non-profit pursuits, I served the community on the Board of Trustees of the Urban Pathways K-5 Charter School in downtown Pittsburgh, PA where I served as the board President in my last few years.

Listed skills include Leadership, Management, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Power Plants, and 7 others.

I was called upon to integrate the formation of a new Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE) corporate entity in Shanghai, China which was previously de-centralized in its management/integration across four separate budgets in product lines, region, and corporate center. Principal Project Engineer - Npp Project Development

Develop markets, feasibility studies, and business cases for the development of new nuclear plant projects exceeding $10 Billion in value for customers in Europe and South America, including contributions to the management of a strategic partnership with a South American construction partner company through the support of developing a quality scope definition, cost estimate, and consortium agreement. Time in this position also included the lead/management of delivery for a multi-million dollar early-works agreement for a European customer which required collaboration across multiple business units of the company in order to provide successful delivery and greatly improved customer satisfaction. Selling a nuclear power plant is a marathon rather than a sprint; the projects I worked on are expected to culminate in signed NPP contracts in the later part of this decade.
