I created and run Flying Fox Media, a company that develops media leaders. The company has worked with development organisations and newsrooms across the world. Its media training and consultancy has helped clients - media organisations, international NGOs, universities and start-ups - set up new content and product strategies, achieve digital transformation and train editorial staff. The company's proudest moment has been helping a refugee newsroom from a country that is hostile to independent media rebuild its operations in exile and become the biggest player in their market.Flying Fox Media also creates media development strategies and quantifies the performance of media organisations and media developers.We also make documentaries for major broadcasters and branded podcasts for businesses.

I was among the creators of Internews' Media Viability Accelerator (MVA), a unique tool for contextualising media performance data and connecting media professionals with people who can help them grow. My work on the project brought a user needs-based focus to the design of the product, ensured that the tool is shaped by editorial professionals who will be using it, and created an international consortium of media developers engaged in building the MVA.

I created and ran development programmes for independent media organisations in Eastern Europe. These programmes helped media outlets develop their editorial strategies and build up editorial, production and distribution skills. I provided mentorship, coaching and feedback on newsroom leadership and on all aspects of editorial and production operations, through training sessions, masterclasses and webinars on editorial standards, podcast production, storytelling techniques, editorial and technical skills in the media sector, innovation, etc. As a media expert, I chaired and ran industry events, both online and offline. I was also a founding member of the Pandemic Mentor Bench, an international group of editors who assisted media organizations in COVID-19 coverage. I initiated and co-authored Internews' COVID-19 glossary, a highly-acclaimed tool which explains COVID-related medical terminology in simple, accessible language.

I provided Saatchi and Saatchi with in-depth analysis of key socio-political, economic and security-related events in parts of the former Soviet Union.

Developing aspects of BBC World Service strategy for the next five to ten years. Covering both global and regional projects; contributing to the mid-term review of W2020, - the biggest expansion project in the World Service's history.Using coaching and mentoring techniques to develop a new generation of editorial leaders for the BBC's language services, primarily working with editors and managers based overseas.

Created and implemented a strategy for BBC Europe’s expansion under the BBC’s largest investment scheme since 1946. This saw the team and its budget double in size. Used audience research data and digital insights to change the editorial approach of services in the region. Refocused the team’s effort towards serving younger, more gender-diverse audiences, while remaining true to the BBC’s values and principles. Successfully managed the change project associated with this editorial transformation. Created a data-driven newsroom culture. The organisational change and editorial transformation helped the department grow its audience by more than 150%. Impact and engagement of the Region’s journalism have increased dramatically, with staff winning multiple awards in Russia and Ukraine. Hired and developed staff , building a united team from previously geographically and culturally disparate departments. Built up an organisational structure for the expanded department, identifying mid-career journalists with leadership potential and guiding them as they transitioned to managerial roles. Launched a new BBC language service, based entirely overseas. Successfully presented the Region and its strategy to internal and external stakeholders, including government ministers at home and abroad, as well as MPs. Successfully worked with foreign governments to gain support for the Region’s work overseas. Changed the tone and language of how the Region communicates its work and agenda, regularly appearing in the press, on TV, at trade events, as well as in front of government agencies around the world. Led the team through numerous crises, carrying responsibility for all internal and external actions and communications to protect the BBC’s reputation and, at times, the safety and security of staff.

With a clear development strategy in mind, revamped the website of the BBC’s Russian Service, focusing on creating added value, innovation and original journalism. Leading by example, developed key people in the service, introduced new workflows, a well-defined strategy and set of goals. This increased impact and audience engagement and improved the reputation of the Russian Service within the BBC. The department became recognized a source of expertise and a successful centre of innovation.

I coordinated, set up and managed BBC News's foreign coverage on a day-to-day basis.

I produced TV, Radio and Online output on a broad range of subjects. I reported from the field across the world, including from high risk environments. I successfully led the BBC’s coverage of several key stories in the European region and beyond.

As one of the founders of bbcrussian.com, I pioneered interactivity and on-demand video at the BBC’s Russian Service long before other media organisations even started considering these formats.

I oversaw a weekly news and current affairs programme, and edited a weekly historical talk show. In charge of a team of five, I produced programmes which were nominated for some of Russia's most prestigious TV awards.
