About Arunkumar Chinnappan, Ph.D.
Currently working as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. Prior to this position, I worked as a research fellow at the University of Warwick. My research career has largely focused on developing computational solvers in the field of rarefied gas dynamics, free molecular flows and high-speed multiphase flows, particularly using the Direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method.

Research Fellow
Working on the development of thermo-chemical non-equilibrium models for an in-house 2D/axisymmetric finite volume hypersonic CFD solver. Implemented and tested a electron non-equilibrium model, incorporating electron-translational, electron-rotational, and electron-vibrational energy relaxations. Implemented multi-species vibrational non-equilibrium model, accounting for individual species' vibrational-translational and vibrational-vibrational energy relaxations among different molecules.
Research Fellow
Developed a Micro-Macro-Surrogate-Sparse (MMS-Sparse) model, a novel Bayesian-regression based approach for low-speed CFD-DSMC coupling. In contrast to the existing coupling strategies, we used Bayesian regression via Relevance Vector Machines (RVM), along with prior defined basis functions to infer constitutive and boundary-condition corrections from the limited noisy DSMC data. In this new approach, DSMC was employed solely to find corrections required by the CFD model, instead of modelling the non-equilibrium region. The proposed model was rigorously tested using unsteady force-driven flow under various forcing, rarefied, and oscillation parameters.
Visiting Researcher
Aerodynamic Modeling of CubeSat Constellations: This project entails quantifying the effect of drag due to the atmosphere and exhaust plume for three 3U CubeSats flying in formation. The SPARTA-DSMC simulations were performed to assess the drag of satellites in various configurations. A novel method was proposed in the original DSMC framework to simulate HFC-236fa as a propellant, and used to analyze plume impingement effects on follower CubeSats.DragSail Systems for Satellite De-Orbit: This problem involves the investigation of dragsails for passive deorbit of CubeSats, an important advancement in orbit debris mitigation. SPARTA-DSMC along with PRISM Uncertainty Quantification (PUQ) tool was used to determine various aerodynamic parameters.
Project Engineer
Proposed a novel post-processing technique based on proper orthogonal decomposition to reduce statistical scattering associated with the DSMC method at low-speed flow regime. Worked on the development and integration of a dynamic collision limiter algorithm with the DSMC solver to reduce the computational cost.
Software Engineer
Involved in the development of fuel and environmental control system (ECS) models for high-speedaircraft simulation. Developed algorithms for fuel pressurization, opening and closing of fuel and ECSvalves, amount of fuel intake depends on throttle input and estimation of fuel weight.
