I help to define, design and write the grant.I help researchers and research teams to develop a coherent and long-term R&D strategy.I support your research team with project initiation and management of a new or existing research projects using proven project management techniques.MY BACKGROUNDI am an open-minded and successful research leader with over a decade expertise in scientific research, attracting funding, performing project management and product development. I worked in industry and academia. I was promoted for delivering successfully project results and obtaining industry funding and large governments grants. I have a strong track record establishing new research directions. I can identify alternative technology solutions. This helps organisations to improve company culture, increase performance, and procure the funding for their daily operations. I am an inventor on over 100 patents in 27 patent families. I worked on several industry sponsored R&D projects. This includes global players such as Siemens, Phillips, BASF, Merck and Chevron and smaller high-tech firms in New Zealand and the USA. I initiated, spearheaded and completed projects that involved both prototype and product development. At Siemens, IRL, Callaghan Innovation and Robinson Research Institute I developed and implemented new innovative lightning, sensors and non-destructive-testing technology in collaboration between industry and academia. I am author on more than 50 peer reviewed journal articles and conference presentations. I coached and guided 12 students at the Ph.D. and 2 students at the master’s level to completion. If you want to get in touch please mail me arvid@grantconsultingnz.com

  • Victoria University Of Wellington
    Senior Scientist
Victoria University Of Wellington Mar 2014 - Aug 2019
I directed my efforts towards technology development for industry. I acquired ongoing MBIE and industry funding. Duties and responsibilities include: • Project management • Writing MBIE, Callaghan Innovation and industry focused grant applications • Scouting and monitoring new technologies• Leadership for development of new and impactful ideas in the team and turning them into successful bids• Leadership in applied research• Technical project support
  • Robinson Research Institute
Technology Development For Industry, Research & Development
Robinson Research Institute Mar 2014 - Aug 2019
Key Projects:• I successfully attracted two large interdisciplinary MBIE grants for magnetic materials for electric vehicle charging and next-generation sensors for non-destructive testing. I supported the development of new research ideas and the overall grant application strategy. I identified and helped to attract new research and industry partners and collaborators. I aligned research and industry needs and coordinated and wrote parts of the grant. I support the technical work with theoretical investigations via FEM simulations. Both grants are multidisciplinary projects. We are working with a large team of researchers from University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, GNS and Victoria University.• We created a field ready prototype for Qi2 (USA) to detect corrosion in pipelines. We tested the prototype successfully in a Chevron facility (USA) and at HOIS (UK). I was the project manager responsible for milestone completion, alignment with funding + external income and supported the technical work with theoretical guidance. My technical work was based on Matlab and Ansys FEM simulations.• Me and a team of engineers+PhD's developed 2 new sensor metrics for a smart distribution transformer together with ETEL Ltd. (NZ). They are now ready for installation in a field transformer. I was the project manager responsible for milestone completion, alignment with government funding and external income. I supported the technical work with theoretical investigations based on FEM simulations.• Me and two colleagues designed, created build and deployed a high magnetic field generation device for measuring ground water flow. The work was part of a National Science Challenge Spearhead project. The device was successfully deployed and tested in a Mini Aquifer setup at the University of Canterbury. This is a multidisciplinary project working with a large team of researchers from Lincoln Agritech, University of Canterbury, GNS and Otago University.
  • Callaghan Innovation
    Senior Research Scientist
    Callaghan Innovation Feb 2013 - Feb 2014
    Lower Hutt
I served as a Senior Research Scientist within newly formed Innovation Agency Callaghan Innovation. My area of focus was obtaining government and industry funding, initiating and aligning applied research with industry and sensors research for industry-focused applications.Key Achievements:• I started a new project including attraction of a large MBIE government grant and substantial industry co-funding with NZ transformer manufacturer ETEL Ltd. Goal was the development of new sensor metrics for the smart distribution transformer. I wrote major parts of the grant application and aligned our research with industry requirements.• I started and executed a proof-of -concept project with NZ quartz oscillator producer Rakon. We tested a new manufacturing method. This helped to attract further MBIE government and Rakon industry co-funding. I supported the development of the overall strategy and wrote parts of the grant application.
  • Industrial Research Ltd
    Senior Research Scientist
Industrial Research Ltd Mar 2011 - Jan 2013
I served as a Senior Research Scientist for the superconductivity and energy research group. My focus was to win government and industry funding and to start new more application driven research in materials and magnetic sensors.Key Achievements:• I started a new research direction of application focused research in magnetic sensors for non-destructive-testing. This included attracting a large government MBIE grant and substantial industry co-funding from non-destructive tool developer Quest Integrated (US). I developed the overall strategy and wrote major parts of the grant application.

  • Siemens
    Science Project Manager
    Siemens Jul 2006 - Feb 2010
    Erlangen Area, Germany
In this position, I led a medium sized team of researchers in the Siemens "Innovative Electronics" research department. We offered technical expertise in the development of new lighting applications through use of organic semiconductors. I served as the project leader and supervised the day-to-day activity of a group of permanent Siemens employees and Ph.D. students.Key Achievements:• Our group produced world record white organic light emitting device. I guided the development and outlined the route how to obtain this world record. The final device structure was transferred to Osrams pilot product line• I coordinated Siemens department collaboration with external partners such as Phillips, BASF, Merck and high profile European Universities. I supported the attraction and completion of grant applications in large interdisciplinary projects funded by the German funding agency BMBF, the European Union and Siemens internal funding.• I planned and coordinated set up of substantial new processing and measurement infrastructure for organic light emitting lighting devices within my department.• Before starting as project leader i was seconded for 6 months to world-leading research group in Japan (Yamagata University) to learn about and transfer technology for high efficient organic light emitting lighting devices.
