About Asante Haughton

I never thought I'd have a Wikipedia page! I'm many things—a mental health advocate/worker, speaker, educator, program builder, advisor, writer, host, and consultant. I've got two TEDx talks and was named as one of Canada’s top 150 mental health difference makers. Having worked in sports, government, healthcare, education, media, and community, my roots are grounded in improving lives. As a speaker, I've been called dynamic, vulnerable, thoughtful and honest. I lean into uncomfortable truths, using storytelling and research to provide incisive commentary and solutions to today’s most challenging problems. I've provided presentations and training to hospitals and academic institutions across four continents, including Cornell, and annual guest lectures with masters and PhD students at the University of Toronto’s school of social work.As an advocate, in 2020, Rachel Bromberg and I co-founded the Reach Out Response Network. We worked with community members, politicians, and the City of Toronto, to advocate for and co-design the Toronto Community Crisis Service, a new emergency service that deploys mental health teams as first responders to persons in distress instead of police. On this journey, we were featured in Huffington Post Canada, made front page of the Toronto Star and went live on networks like CBC and Al Jazeera! As an educator/advisor, I've provided mental health and equity/diversity/inclusion training to Sony Music Canada, Maple Leaf Foods, VICE, Bell Let’s Talk, and BDA Sports, a sports agency whose clients include NBA superstar Luka Doncic.I serve on working groups with Toronto Police Services, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in an effort to eliminate racism in these institutions. I worked with the Government of Canada for half a decade to amplify initiatives that support the mental health of Black Canadians. I've also brokered many partnerships, most proud of creating a relationship with the Toronto International Film Festival. As a writer I've contributed thoughts and poetry to several publications, including Africanthology, a collection of works featuring Canada’s most prominent Black thinkers, poets and literary figures. I am a contributing editor to Inspire Magazine. In my day job, I design, manage and facilitate life-changing mental health programs at Stella’s Place, once transforming a $62,000/yr program into a $1.2 mil/yr program in just two years. When not trying to save the world, I can be found Netflixing, gaming, coaching basketball, being frustrated with Toronto sports teams, and laughing at my own jokes.

Listed skills include Mental Health, Public Speaking, Community Outreach, Psychology, and 30 others.
