  Ash Bennett is a consultant ecologist based in the north west of England. The current business began in 1999 with an extensive natterjack toad survey for the Lake District National Park Authority at Drigg Dunes SSSI and LNR. Many similar scientific surveys have been conducted since then including Phase 3 of the Cumbria Great-Crested Newt Species Action Plan for English Nature (now Natural England), the Fourth National Otter Survey of England for the Environment Agency, a survey of Cumbrian Otter Havens for the North West Otter and Rivers Project and an extensive reedbed mapping project covering Cumbria for the Environment Agency and the Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Much of the business workload is for developers with an interest in the presence of protected species at prospective development sites. The main aim of the business is to provide clients with extensive and detailed information regarding the ecology of the survey area which at the same time is clear and relevant. The business strives to produce quality reports with concise conclusions avoiding the inclusion of expansive, irrelevant or inappropriate material. Recommendations aim to put forward the best case scenario in terms of protected species and biodiversity in general whilst at the same time suggesting practical and reasonable solutions for the developer. When necessary, GPS readings are taken on site which are then double checked against GIS systems in the office. Survey reports also include a search of external biological records databases such as those held by NBN Gateway. We are able to conduct specialist invertebrate surveys, breeding/overwintering bird surveys and vantage point surveys, detailed botanical surveys to NVC. NE licences are held for natterjack toad, great-crested newts, white-clawed crayfish and all species of British Bat. Mitigation services such as amphibian exclusion works and the appropriate applications for NE EPS licensing form a large part of the business workload.
