Having grown up around leaders in the field of energy, we had solar before it was cool, but it was only a small system because our house was built with passive principles so that it didn't waste energy in the first place. Energy efficiency and positive impact were always a part of my life. At age nine I started a business selling marbles - investing profits into buying more marbles, then buying lollies and giving half to my younger sister. Eventually I founded www.austep.au to help businesses reduce electricity, and we still follow the same model - investing in growth then donating 50% of profits to charity.People describe me as a pragmatic idealist, and Austep is no different. With a national portfolio including Mazda, Kraft Heinz, major chain stores, hospitals, and schools, Austep is a BCorp social enterprise creating positive impact through the power of business, in a way that makes sense for our corporate clients; because it improves their bottom line. Specifically, we are driving the massive global shift to net zero through energy efficiency, while giving our clients a ROI of up to 50% PA. Our experience includes lighting, air conditioning, refrigeration, passive upgrades, and hot water. In the words of the International Energy Agency Chief: energy efficiency is the ‘first fuel’ – the cheapest and fastest way to reach net zero and reduce energy costs. While it has to be a comprehensive integrated approach including renewables, behaviour change, and lifecycle thinking, energy efficiency makes sense for the planet, and for businesses. This is what Austep does.In the process we improve wellbeing, comfort, and safety for building occupants, help businesses become more productive, and improve their own positive impact, while also improving their profitability.
