Introduced Kafka as a streaming data platform and developed a set of tools and libraries for schema and topic management and streaming application deployment. These libraries have accelerated the adoption of Kafka within the organization and are used by many different engineering teams.Pioneered the use of Kubernetes as an application platform, including full CI/CD deployments which highly accelerated developer productivity. This effort was spun out into a full-fledged application platform team to roll out these tools to the entire engineering organization.

Identified a gap in the tracking of operational metrics for one of the largest exome sequencing labs in the world and implemented a data warehouse that provides insight into potential bottlenecks and process improvements in the laboratory. Uses a streaming architecture based on Kinesis streams and Amazon Redshift to minimize latency of data.Led a small team of engineers in the design and implementation of an infrastructure to support Copy Number Variation analysis for all samples sequenced within the laboratory. Coordinated development of multiple microservices as well as a workflow engine responsible for orchestrating microservices and analyzing whole exome data. Designed from the ground up to scale as lab volume increases using serverless architecture.

Recognized a need in the organization for an automated sample tracking and processing pipeline that guides samples through next-generation sequencing protocols in the laboratory and the downstream bioinformatics pipelines. Developed a proof of concept and presented an implementation proposal to stakeholders. Led the resulting team engineers to a successful delivery of the project on an aggressive schedule.Led the refactoring effort of a mission-critical Laboratory Information Management System from a third party semantic database backend to a more scalable, auditable solution based on the Datomic database. This included an analysis of available options, rewrite of the domain model and service layer of the application.

Led a large scale, cloud-based data analysis project for a translational research study where thousands of whole genome sequencing samples were validated, quality controlled and analyzed in a timely manner.Participated in the proposal writing process on multiple government contracts and provided oversight and technical solutions for many of the proposals, resulting in a win rate of approximately 40%.Instrumental in the acquisition of five government contracts that grew the size of the center from four employees to twenty over the course of three years.
