Ashish Dev combines professional and executive experiences in banks and as a consultant with his strong analytical background and thought leadership in risk management and regulatory matters. Mr. Dev has more than a dozen years of senior executive experience as a risk management professional and is one of the most published leaders in the field. Mr. Dev has been one of the industry’s most active contributors in the Basel process. Mr. Dev was a member of ISDA working group on counterparty risk (WGCR) and IIF working group on operational risk (WGOR) The Basel II IRB rules for securitization are calibrated to a model co-authored by Mr. Dev. The concept of correlation being a function of credit quality introduced in another paper published by Mr. Dev found its place in Basel II Advanced IRB formulae. More recently he has been active in the Basel II.5 and Basel III developments. Mr. Dev holds a Ph.D. in Finance & Economics and was a student of Nobel laureate Harry Markowitz. He also holds the CFA professional designation. He has been the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Credit Risk since 2007. In 2004 Ashish was the editor of a best-selling book on Economic Capital, in which experts from almost all the large banks contributed. Mr. Dev is listed as one of the most published authors in the period 1994-2006 in Risk. In 2009, Ashish was awarded one of the “top faces of operational risk” for making the operational risk discipline what it is today.

    Ashish Dev is Managing Director in JP Morgan Chase. Ashish has a governance role over economic and regulatory capital methodologies globally and also heads up corporate model risk governance across all businesses firm-wide. In this capacity, one of his major roles is JPMC’s qualification for Basel II for credit risk and operational risk, market risk and securitization capital under Basel II.5, capital charges for counterparty credit risk and liquidity risk under Basel III. He has been heavily involved in Fed-stress tests performed in JPMC for capital adequacy purposes building up from all businesses and risk stripes, as well as in liquidity stress tests. In all these, regulatory liaison at various levels forms a major component of Mr. Dev’s functions. Mr. Dev has led the effort of making model risk as a distinct risk stripe, to be managed with appropriate controls and validation. In the last few years, he has set up governance processes over hundreds of models in JPMC, the results of which are relied on for important decision-making or inform financial statements. Mr. Dev plays a significant role in strategic capital planning, starting from potential reduction in risk-weighted assets for many large portfolios within JPMC.

    Mr. Dev was Executive Vice President of Risk Management at KeyCorp, a Cleveland-based super-regional bank holding company. There he established a shareholder value-creation paradigm employing an economic capital framework, risk-adjusted pricing of products, risk-adjusted performance measures, and compensation indicators as part of establishing an enterprise risk management framework in the bank. Mr. Dev led a process of complete revamp of credit underwriting in KeyCorp as more analytical model-driven credit analysis was introduced, including a whole new credit policy. Mr. Dev’s responsibilities included portfolio credit risk, market risk, securitization risk and operational risk. He served as KeyCorp’s Basel II coordinator and started the firm’s active credit portfolio management function. Mr. Dev was a member of many of the highest level management committees of KeyCorp like ALCO and Capital Committee. For several years, Ashish has been in several industry groups in areas of enterprise risk management, risk appetite and risk strategies, of which most US banks were members.

    Mr. Dev was Senior Vice President in the Finance department at Bank One (now JP Morgan Chase) and before that head of quantitative research and analysis. Both at Bank One and at KeyCorp, Mr. Dev has led and established analytics for many types of consumer assets for purposes of credit underwriting, marketing strategies and collections. In Bank One his team set up a VaR system for market risk oversight in Bank One, using RiskMetrics, as early as in 1995 and established VaR-based trading limits. Most of his period in Bank One was in treasury, funding and market risk related activities.
