Adventure Facilitator, Rental Attendant, Bouldering Wall Attendant
The Outdoor Recreation Center at Washington State University provided opportunities to students and community members to learn and expand their skills and experiences in the outdoors. I planned, organized and led groups in outdoor activities in the capacity of an Adventure Facilitator (AF). Group size varied from 3 to 40 or 50, and the skill levels were everything from brand new to 30 years of experience. Being able to effectively communicate and teach patrons was extremely important and intensified not only by age and ability level, but also through language and cultural differences. Working with students and professors from all over the world - accommodating specific cultural and religious needs, as well as making the group inclusive for everyone - to provide a fun, safe and experiential activity was both challenging and rewarding. I specialized facilitating groups in kayaking, backpacking and rock climbing, but also had groups participate in whitewater rafting, EcoAdventures (service based activities to clean up outdoor recreation areas), group instruction in kayak skills, ski and snowboard maintenance, and presentations of how and where to find outdoor activities in the local area for personal use. I was also involved in two children's summer programs, Cougar Quest and Kid's Camp. Children, aged 5 to 15, were taught some of the basics of climbing and kayaking and participated in group hikes. Other responsibilities, were working in the university's rental shop; duties included maintenance of gear, fitting and instructing on proper use of equipment and handling payment. As a bouldering wall attendant is was my responsibility to keep the wall and patrons safe, enforcing the rules and to be available to patrons for instruction and help in their climbing skills.
