I'm a pioneer in the storage industry with over 30 years of experience in seeing what is missing and coming up with a solution to it. Yes, I write code still. I also still do my own electrical and mechanical design. I still do my own marketing and my own financial models. More succinctly, I hurt people's heads on a daily basis. I refuse to "dumb things down". I prefer to lift people up. If this isn't enough, I own and operate my own Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school. Why? Make a wrong move in Jiu Jitsu and you're going to get choked out or have a limb broken, tendons torn. You can fight and resist the situation and do some pretty irreparable damage to yourself. Or you can submit to the situation and try to learn where you went wrong, so that you can do better in the next round and ultimately formulate a better strategy and employ better tactics than your opponent. Accepting failure accelerates learning. And we need to get back to encouraging people to fail more quickly that we might learn from the mistakes. For several decades I have watched the disconnect between various departments within corporations. I practice the art of teaching the people around me how to fish. As CEO, I expect my people to do the same thing with their own direct reports. The notion of creating job security by making ourselves irreplaceable is part of the corporate problem. People don't like to be vulnerable. These are the foundations and principles I employ in innovating our industry, our community, and the people around us. I am not for everyone, nor do I try to be. However, if you spend any amount of time around me, you will have no choice but to find yourself doing things that you previously thought yourself incapable of ever accomplishing.

Chief Executive OfficerCachengo, Inc. Oct 2017 - PresentHuntingdon, Tennessee, UsSimply put, we process data where it occurs, where the action is. This stands in contrast to how others gather data at the Edge and move it to the Cloud to be processed. This simple change in approach demands a whole new de-centralized infrastructure that triggers as much as a 10x reduction in CAPEX and OPEX, while dramatically increasing security, performance, and freedom of choice. -
Distinguished Architect, Standards & Open SourceHuawei Technologies Jun 2014 - Oct 2017Shenzhen, Guangdong, CnI work primarily in standards and in open source, as my title suggests. This work is heavily concentrated in NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) and in SDN (Software Defined Networking). I do occasionally delve into other standards, but the real effort is trying to take what we have been creating from an NFV standards perspective and then turning that into usable open source via OPNFV, OpenStack, FD.io, and my original effort at Yunify, which was the original NFV open source effort approximately 18 months before we started OPNFV. I'm a firm believer that standards are still necessary for open source work, or we're likely to keep reinventing the wheel. Unfortunately, there is no real defined process for keeping the two intertwined, which is why I've been leading that charge across the industry. I'm also a big believer in the open hardware movement, such as OCP, or other white box efforts that involve reference designs. This is my ecosystem for my work to cultivate the standardization of hardware acceleration (HWA) capabilities for such functions as regex offload and various other security and storage functions. While I do have my loyalties, I am tasked with being an ecosystem builder. This means I have to remain fairly objective about growing the community of hardware and software associated with NFV, regardless of company affiliations. If you're an OCP or white box vendor, I want to work with you. -
