Whilst working as an intern for the Disability Rights Team, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Disability Commissioner Dr Ben Gauntlett. My role included extensive research for projects the team are currently undertaking. My research included looking into special measures for positive discrimination under State and Territory discrimination legislation, as well as researching companies in Australia using targeted recruitment, and producing a 20 page report on disability statistics from the 2021 Census data. I was given the opportunity to observe meetings with IncludeAbility Network Members whilst taking the meeting minutes.

While clerking with Justice Corboy I was able to attend various criminal matters and was privileged enough to look through materials relating to some of the matters to gain a better understanding. I also attended further seminars with the Chief Justice, Principal Registrar and Principal Associate to the Chief Justice about the functions of the court and the work that goes on behind the scenes.

While clerking with Justice Archer I was able to attend various civil matters covering a range of different topics. I proof read various documents including judgements and court orders and was fortunate enough to discuss various matters with Her Honour Justice Archer. I also attended further seminars with the Chief Justice, Principal Registrar and Principal Associate to the Chief Justice about the functions of the court and the work that goes on behind the scenes.

While clerking with Judge MacLean I sat in on criminal trials and was able to watch one from the empanelment of the jury to the final jury verdict. I also attended seminars with the Chief Judge, Principal Registrar and other influential members of the court as they explained specific areas of law and the processes of the court.

For the duration of the internship I was given different client files to work on. My work included meeting with clients, drafting Federal Court documents, producing research and advice memorandums, interviewing clients over the phone through a translator and keeping the file up to date with any correspondence and new documents.
