As a member of the Hazard Risk Management team, my role is to support the provision of hazard and risk advice and guidance to NEMA staff, the Minister for Emergency Management, CDEM Groups and our partner agencies. We support the goals of the National Disaster Resilience Strategy, use science to support risk management, and advocate for a risk-based approach to policy and practice. Within the team I provide subject matter expertise on Aotearoa New Zealand's geological hazards, hazard monitoring systems and arrangements, and the strategic science system.I support NEMA's response operations capability as an NCC / NCMC Intelligence Function Manager.I also hold the current role of Chair of the Working Group for Disaster Management and Preparedness ("Working Group Three") of the UNESCO/IOC Pacific Tsunami Warning System.

As a Shift Leader in the National Geohazards Monitoring Centre, I managed a team of three Geohazard Analysts. My responsibilities included:• navigating external and internal relationships sensitively and professionally• mentoring and training Geohazard Analysts, and managing the professional development of direct reports• acting as the NGMC Response Manager during a geohazard response escalation, with a mandate for ambiguous decision-making when required• Supporting the operational efficacy and growth of the NGMC as part of an Operational Leadership TeamI was also a co-product owner for the development and implementation of the NGMC’s tsunami software, TOAST.

As a Geohazard Analyst in the National Geohazards Monitoring Centre, my role was to provide rapid analysis of geohazard threats, following a set of Standard Operating Procedures. Key aspects of the role included:• Adaptability to rapidly changing and ambiguous circumstances• Initiation and design of operational improvements and procedure review • Broad and detailed understanding of New Zealand’s geohazards• Frequent high-pressure high-fidelity exercising, and implementation of learnings from these and regular debriefs
