My responsibilities involved undertaking field surveys and environmental audits on the behalf of various councils in NSW and Victoria. This included follow-up audits and engaging with stakeholders to educate and provide feedback on their individual and/or organisation’s obligations to optimise stakeholder environmental performance and regulatory compliance.

Ashleigh is an environmental planner with experience in interpreting environmental legislation, preparation of high quality environmental reports, environmental risk assessment and mitigation, GIS mapping, statistical analysis, project management, and stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution.Ashleigh has worked as an environmental planner and project manager of several large projects, including environmental and heritage approvals and auditing compliance for government agencies.

In my current role as an Environmental Planner at Barnson Pty Ltd, I am required to utlise and interpret the local government area environmental planning instruments and Development Control Plans, as well as the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, associated acts and regulations. My role requires that I help with developing policies and plan for the use of land and resources, advise on economic, environmental, social and cultural needs of particular localities, as well as, provide accurate technical advice and liaise with fellow staff, Councils, other Government agencies, developers and the like on environmental legislation and policies. Another key aspect of my role is to administer development and rezoning applications for submission to relevant consent authorities, design strategies to guide land and resource use and development in particular locations, and perform site inspections.

My previous role as an Environmental Planner at Telstra was to implement the rollout of Australia’s National Broadband Network (nbn) that covered all aspects of environmental planning and approvals process. My responsibilities included detailed desktop environmental assessments utilising GIS mapping programs, implementing environmental field assessments and surveys, overseeing the exemptions and approvals process and liaising with various government bodies and stakeholders regarding nbn construction matters. Working knowledge of the relevant local, state and federal legislation was essential, such as, the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Protection of Environment Operations Act 1997, Heritage Act 1977, Sydney LEP 2012, Contaminated Land Management Act 1997, Telecommunications Act 1997, Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995, SEPPs and an understanding of the ISO 14000 standards. In addition, a key aspect of my role was to apply controls to engineering and construction teams on various environmentally sensitive sites, as well as, monitoring project management software to ensure the effective and timely delivery of reports and project completion dates.

I assisted at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) analysing GoPro footage of fish assemblages for the World Harbour Project (http://www.worldharbourproject.org). I have previously volunteered as an assistant for Postdoctoral research studies that involved identifying and dissecting fishes from by-catch for isotope analysis, genetic testing, ageing, and diet, as well as creating artificial seagrass beds for deployment at several locations around Sydney coastal region.
