The opportunity to join Terra Measurement as Senior Surveyor gave me the chance to implement some of the good survey practices I had learnt throughout my career and also the platform to pass this knowledge on to other employees within the business. I also set my own personal goals, being open to new innovations within the survey industry, learn new skills and improve in those areas where my knowledge was lacking or, in some cases, had very little experience in during my former employment. An example of this was learning how to post process scan data in Leica Cyclone and also drawing elevations and floor plans from point clouds using Cloudworx.On successfully passing my PTS course I was able to carry out rail infrastructure surveys, working on proposed platform extension projects at stations such as Fiskerton and Lowdham in Nottinghamshire and carried out many railway embankment and culvert surveys working for rail based clients such as QTS, Aspin Group and Network Rail.As a Senior Surveyor within a medium sized business I took some responsibility for putting together Health and Safety documents, Method Statements and Risk Assessments as well as reporting and sending final documents to clients. Again I used my survey experience to help the Managing Director with project quotations and quality assurance procedures and also took responsibility for keeping the business moving forward whilst the MD was away on annual leave or in meetings. I also took the opportunity to complete a First Aid Course.

After changes in management and personnel within the company I was given the opportunity to take on further responsibilities and lead small teams on surveying projects. These included topographical and measured building surveys for refurbishment and redesign of many McDonald’s restaurants across the country, stock volume surveying in Norway and measuring NIA and GIA at the then newly built Westfield Centre in White City, London. The equipment I used included Total Stations, Levels, GPS, Measured Building Software (MBS) and 3D Laser Scanners. I was also heavily involved in providing input towards timescales for job and quotations for surveys

After two years on site experience, learning the basics and fundamentals of surveying, as well as the knowledge I was gaining whilst working towards completing a course at TSA Surveying Course. I was now able to successfully carry out small topographical surveys independently. This led to me being promoted to become a Junior Surveyor.As a Junior Surveyor I continued to carry out surveys independently and also took on responsibility for continual projects, such as quarry update and volumetric surveys for major companies such as Lafarge Aggregates, Hanson and Cemex. In July 2010 I successfully passed the TSA Surveying Course.

On completion of A levels, I embarked on my career in surveying. My first appointment was as a Trainee Surveyor. Responsible for assisting Junior and Senior Surveyors on site with Topographical, Volumetric and Measured Building Surveys as well as being involved with processing data in the office. I was also responsible for managing and maintaining the equipment room and ensuring all kit was accounted for, fit for purpose and calibrated.
