Ashley’s career journey from school to the tools is a great example of the power that exists in school and industry partnerships. With no mechanics in her family and no interest in cars, Ashley hesitantly attended work experience in a heavy vehicle workshop as a year 10 student and found a career she loved, by accident. Because of this, Ashley is a passionate advocate for the value of work experience – specifically work experience outside a student’s usual range of visibility – and the potential that awaits people in VET pathways and trade careers.Qualifying as a Heavy Vehicle Diesel Mechanic despite performing in the top 5% of the state in her year 12 exams, Ashley has engaged with many industries during her career as a diesel mechanic. Specialising in on-highway diesel engines as an apprentice, Ashley has also worked as a FIFO mechanic at a rural coal mine, ran her own local business as a diesel mechanic and carried out field service repairs to earth-moving equipment in the construction industry.No longer spinning filters, Ashley is currently working as an Apprenticeship Mentor - Women in Trades, leaning into her role as an advocate for VET Pathways and trade careers by supporting the up-and-coming generation of tradeswomen. By both setting apprentices up for success within the industry and attracting the next generation of apprentices through community engagement, Ashley is looking to increase the number of people thriving in trades.
