My role at PIKE involves preparing and delivering overhead and underground power distribution designs in the form of material lists, construction drawings, etc. To do this efficiently, I analyze tensions, loads, and deflections of conductors on utility poles to produce the safest design that provides the customer with service reliability. The job also involves coordinating with construction and fielding personnel to meet customer desires and resolve job-site conflicts. Part of my role, that I proudly took on 8 months into my time at PIKE, is team lead for the coastal zone. In this position, I help train designers and promote expectations within the design process, from fielding to submission. This heavily involves reviewing the coastal team’s designs and providing corrections and instruction to improve the overall project. This has been a great opportunity that allowed me to officially step into the engineering industry and I enjoy getting to work with my peers to do what we do!

During my final year at WCU, I had the opportunity to work with a great team to complete a capstone project for Thermo Fisher Scientific. It was a process improvement project for their ultra-low temperature freezer process. The project initially focuses on the ergonomic issues within the tank taping line which led to product designing & communicating with vendors that could supply the equipment within budget and time constraints. The project later shifted to lean management, using a Lean Six Sigma Approach, to balance the workstation through inventory adjustment. Despite the large scope change, we were able to deliver a useful solution to their problem. This opportunity allowed me to further develop skills in process improvement and gave me industry experience, especially with product design and meeting customer qualifications.

I was responsible for fulfilling all online orders; the main role including picking & staging products for customers. This job also included contacting customers on existing orders to verify pickups, cancellations, or product replacements. The role also required assisting customers in-store with their projects, along with operating heavy machinery, like all associates. This job helped me further develop my customer service and project management skills, as I worked with customers and coworkers throughout the day to complete multiple orders at once that were in different stages of the fulfillment, delivery, and in-store processes. I was also able to build my leadership skills while training new associates or managing 2-person teams while collaborating on these multiple orders.
