My name is Ashley Rabe and I am motivated by my passion for mycology and specifically the role of fungi in the broader context of ecology. In pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree in Sustainability with a focus on sustainable ecosystems, I hope to secure professional positions that bridge the gap between emerging mycological findings and practical sustainability solutions. In my diligent independent research, I seek fungi in the woods to identify and study, and take independent classes offered by established permaculture institutions, learning how mushrooms can change the way we view agriculture, medicine, and ecosystem stewardship. Ever the forgotten kingdom of life, botany and biology are thrilling topics but what are they without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, present in most land plants and responsible for up to 80% of nitrogen and phosphorous uptake? And what of the saprobic fungi reducing dead organic matter to its individual elements, making these nutrients available again in a process that remediates soil? After my time at ASU, I aspire to secure a Master's degree in biochemistry or microbiology. Professionally, I would like to continue researching fungi for an organization that works to improve the processes of agriculture, medicine, or ecology that currently hold us back and damage our planet.
