Upon earning my Arborist Certification and Arborist Apprentice Journey-worker license, I was promoted from technician 1 to Forestry Technician 2. Increased responsibility includes, but is not limited to, training new and current tree climbing employees on safe industry practices and updated climbing methods. General responsibilities:• Trains arborist and tree trimmer apprentices• Follows directives of lead worker on daily assignments• Prunes, removes, grinds stumps, plants, waters, fertilizes, sprays, and inventories trees• Operates machinery needed in the maintenance of trees including aerial lift operation• Educates and explains forestry standards of street tree maintenance to citizens• Serves as crew leader on volunteer work projects• Maintains equipment for daily use• Performs 24 hour emergency storm response and snow removal duties in coordination with other departments• Maintains a safe working environment• Climbs trees to perform maintenance with using industry accepted rope and saddle techniques• Perform intermediate rigging and lowering techniques• Performs other duties as assigned• May also be required to operate heavy equipment• Performs additional duties as assigned

As a teacher at Nature's Classroom, I was responsible for administering informational hikes as well as teaching classes. Students from around the area would take field trips to Nature's Classroom to work on team building, outdoor education, and experiential learning. School groups could choose from an assortment of 25 classes offered by Nature's Classroom. I particularly enjoyed teaching Doctor in the Woods class, a lesson on survival in the woods, and Egg Drop, where students learned fundamental lessons in physics in order to protect an egg from cracking upon impact off of the second story. I used information that I learned while studying as a Natural Resources major at Sewanee to create a learning environment while I led hikes. This experience was cut short due to Coronavirus.

Cedar City, Utah

I am working within an 8 person crew to restore our public lands. Each crew member earns a Wilderness First-Aid certification, herbicide application training, and chainsaw training. We use chainsaws for 10 hours a day to remove Russian Olives in and around Escalante River. We are responsible for a 2 mile polygon section of the river. The Russian Olives were brought to the American West as a means of erosion control. The root systems of the Olives have done such a good job limiting erosion, that now they are channelizing the Escalante River, making it deeper and colder. This channelization limits habitat for wildlife that are adapted to live in the warm and meandering stream system of the Escalante River. Partnering with the Escalante River Watershed Partnership, this season, we will be completing the primary treatment of BLM's longest on going project, finishing a 10 year long project.

Sewanee, Tn

I am assisting in collecting population data of salamanders, bats, tree frogs, turtles, and small mammals living within Sewanee's 13,000 acres of land. I have been learning new skills relevant to safely surveying the wildlife without harming them. We have set up bat monitors and traversed streams using drip nets to catch, identify, weigh, and measure salamanders. It has been a joy to pick up new skills, work outdoors, and gain new experiences with wildlife. Data collected will be used by professors of the university in their research papers.

I received my S130/2190: Firefighter Training and Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior certification in January 2018. Since my certification, I have participated in a number of prescribed burns on Sewanee's campus. My responsibilities include utilization of drip torches, watching for spot fires, and carrying the water tank backpacks. I received by RT 130: Annual Fireline Refresher Training in January 2019. I plan on participating in burns as soon as it stops raining up here!

Lost Cove, Sewanee, Tn

I have participated in a dye-tracing study in The University of the South's Lost Cove during the second semester period of 2018 and 2019 school years. Lost Cove is a 4200 acre solution valley comprised of Mississippian limestone strata. In multiple areas of the cove, streams disappear into sinks, travel through underground conduits, and resurge at lower elevations. Previous dye tracing studies in Lost Cove date back to 1980. With decades of curiosity as to the exact paths water travels within Lost Cove, many unanswered questions remain. Second semester of 2018, I worked with 4 other students to establish new connections between upper stratigraphic sinks and lower points of resurgence. The research included multiple survey trips, background dye tests, placing charcoal dye receptors where we proposed the resurgence would be, and the dumping of the dye. The final product of our study extended connections of water flowing into a sink at the highest elevation tested in Lost Cove and into the already established gauging station of the watershed. In November 2018, I traveled with 2 other members of the research conducted in Lost Cove to the Geological Society of America National Conference to present our findings. We actively explained our findings to geologists who came to observe and ask questions about our poster. Our abstract was published in Vol. 50, No. 6 of the GSA Conference Abstracts. Second semester 2019, we will be going back to Lost Cove to establish more connections of the underground conduit system.

Monteagle Sunday School Assembly, Sewanee, Tn

For 8 weeks, my co-worker and I completed a tree inventory of a neighborhood adjacent to the campus of the University of the South. In total, we surveyed 2,736 trees in the common areas of the Monteagle Sunday School Assembly over the course of the research assistantship. We created GPS points for each tree, measured diameter at breast height using a DBH tape, measured heights with a laser hypsometer, then we conducted a health report of the roots, stem, scaffold branches, and foliage. This information was given to the neighborhood for maintenance and treatments needed for specific trees.

I became interested in the Sustainability Fellowship program in the spring of 2018 through the following description of the position, "The University of the South’s Undergraduate Sustainability Fellowship program is designed to enhance student’s perception of sustainability through diverse projects that address critical university and community needs while simultaneously cultivating skill sets that will help them succeed in future careers. Through their hands-on involvement, from start to finish, each project has the opportunity to positively, and continually, impact Sewanee for a more sustainable tomorrow.‌"Through my Fellowship opportunity, I created Sewanee's first rain garden.I developed a project plan that outlines the installation of a small-scale rain garden from site identification and cost analysis to materials and labor requirements. This project is intended to encourage awareness of stormwater management techniques at Sewanee as well as offering a tangible product that can be used for future educational endeavors. I managed many different moving parts. I coordinated with multiple organizations within the University in order to make the garden happen. I worked most closely with the Facilities Management crew. Through the help of FM, we were able to rent heavy machinery to excavate the 6 inch deep, 850 square foot rain garden. Once the garden was excavated, a mix of 60% sand, 20% compost, and 20% existing soil was placed back into the garden - to promote infiltration. After the garden was filled with substrate, I, along with many volunteers, planted 550 locally sourced, water loving plants.
