About Ashley Robertson Preston, Ph.D.

I am a historian, curator, nonprofit founder and author. My passion to enlighten others about the power of history has allowed me to manage a historic home, consult museums and teach as an academic. In my current role as Associate Professor of History at Howard University I teach United States History and Public History. I am the author of Mary McLeod Bethune the Pan-Africanist and Mary McLeod Bethune in Florida: Bringing Social Justice to the Sunshine State. My past positions in the field of Public History include serving as director of the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation-National Historic Landmark at Bethune-Cookman University while I was also an archives technician for the National Archives for Black Women’s History at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House-National Historic Site. My research has been published in Phylon, Journal of Black Studies, and The Journal of Negro Education. In addition to my work as a historian I am the founder of the nonprofit Carter G. Cares Inc. Inspired by my son, who was born prematurely at 28 weeks and weighing 1 lb 4 oz, the organization raises awareness and provides support for NICU families and high-risk mothers.
