As an instructional aide for EEB 373, the upper-level general ecology lab, I help to design, facilitate, and lead field ecology exercises for a class of ~20 undergraduate students. For EEB 500, a graduate-level introduction to ecology research course, I help facilitate field projects and provide mentorship to the students. The courses take place at the University of Michigan Biological Station and are primarily hands-on ecology experiences in the field. I also assist the students with statistics and project design, and give mini-lectures on data collection techniques and ecology concepts.

I designed and led a research-based thesis project to understand how functional traits of plant understory communities vary through time. This project required reading and synthesizing scientific literature and conducting a 2.5-month field work season. Using the data I collected from the field season, I conducted statistical analyses and visualized results using R. I then wrote a research thesis and gave a presentation to summarize the project and its results.

I also handled baseline data collection and organization for the project, including collecting PAR, soil moisture, and plant community data for 40 experimental plots. I led an independent project focused on cell size variation in switchgrass to understand influences of polyploidy and local environment on plant growth for biofuel production. I used ImageJ, R, and ArcGIS Pro to collect, analyze, and visualize data from leaf cross section images. I wrote an honors thesis and presented a poster at two research symposiums to present findings to students and faculty across the broader university community.
