I serve animals by serving the people who love them. With nearly 10 years of experience in animal welfare, I have constantly and consciously chosen to make an impact on the pets in my community and the animal shelters who protect them.I began my path as a receptionist at a small animal hospital. I found almost immediately that my passion favored unwanted animals and directed my attention to animal rescue and sheltering. I started my career in animal sheltering at a small humane society where I managed the foster program of approximately 100 animals. While I loved my job there, I felt the pull to serve my OWN city, and moved into the foster program manager position at Indianapolis Animal Care Services. During my time there, our foster program more than doubled the capacity for animals at IACS by housing nearly 500 animals in foster homes, a growth of over %400. In February of 2018, I attended the American Pets Alive! Conference in Austin, Texas. While at this conference, one of my biggest takeaways was the growing popularity of shelter diversion programs, specifically for open-admission, high intake shelters. This felt like a gaping hole in the services my city was providing to it's residents, and the impact a program like this could make was profound. When I returned home, I immediately began a proposal for Indy CARES, a shelter diversion program serving Indianapolis Animal Care Services, the largest animal shelter in Indiana. In March of 2018, Indy CARES began serving Indianapolis residents at risk of surrendering their pets by offering them resources and support during times of need. We offer behavior consultations, pet deposit subsidization, housing relief, and free medical care. Our program has served over 1500 animals and their families during times of crises. In 2019 we received a grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust that allowed for me to serve full-time as program director for Indy CARES. In my current position, I oversee the development of our program operations and develop goals and objectives for our future. I make all budgeting decisions and approve cases based on our financial standing and current case load. I work to constantly improve our program and expand our services provided, with the goal of serving my city and its pets the best way possible.
