Led the materials-related research efforts in support of USGBC’s LEED rating system, the most widely used green building certification program in the world. Directed several large-scale projects, including the development of the upcoming publication "Better Building Materials: Understanding Human Health and Environmental Attributes," which defines the core information that building project teams need to know to make the consideration of human health and environmental issues a systematic part of building materials specification, purchasing, and use, and the Materials Mapping Project, which analyzes and visualizes the landscape of research on building materials to identify critical research opportunities. Developed scientific agenda for lectures, meetings, and workshops around the country that engage manufacturers, building professionals, and researchers on topics including big data, green chemistry, alternatives assessment, innovation, and supply chain optimization. Represented USGBC at high-level industry, academic, and government meetings.

Advanced NSF initiatives in the areas of sustainability, biomaterials, big data, and early-career faculty development. Collaborated with other NSF divisions, university faculty and department heads, and professional societies. Engaged White House officials, academia, and industry in support of NSF's role in the interagency Materials Genome Initiative, which aims to reduce the time it takes to bring new materials to market through better integration of theory, experiment, and computation. Organized workshops and spoke at conferences on NSF priority programs.

Developed and taught undergraduate Honors course on connections between science and music. (Spring 2012 - University Honors, Virginia Tech; Fall 2012 - University Honors College, University of Maryland College Park)

Served as advisor on STEM, higher, and K-12 education policy. Engaged a wide array of stakeholders in the development of legislation, including constituents, science societies, university officials, education and civil rights associations, White House staff, and members of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). Prepared memos and speeches, staffed hearings, and negotiated policy.

Conducted research on interaction between carbon nanotubes and IR radiation for biomedical applications. Supervised master's and undergraduate students. Developed laboratory courses in materials and physics.
