About Ashley Jones

As a data scientist, I get to do some really cool stuff! Curious by nature, nothing motivates me more than crunching numbers and exploring relationships, to finding out what really drives the numbers in the first place. I have a PhD in remote sensing and atmospheric physics attained at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (2009). Demonstrated expertise in:- Researcher using large data products, data mining, testing and evaluation analytics, statistics and machine learning modeling, and monitoring of real-time measurements- Database design, database administration, and database development- Communications both oral and written; Published articles in reputable journals, Presented at international meetings/conferences (both scientific and general audiences), lecturer; of Radiative Transfer and Remote Sensing to PhD students; general climate sciences to primary and secondary school children.A team-player who has a passion for numbers and enjoys learning new skills to help further his development. My education is broad and I can quite happily say I'm very adaptable and quick learning to any role I may be given. My passion though is data science and my goals are set on working my way towards becoming an expert in machine learning and AI. I love spending a lot of my own personal time building AI-based computer games, as well as, exploring data using Python libraries (using Spyder/Jupyter notebook: Pandas, Numpy, Matplotlib, Plotly, Seaborn, Scikit-Learn, Tensorflow ) to help gain more experience whilst also satisfying my curiosity.Outside of work, I am very energetic, hanging with my family or friends either on the hockey rink or baseball diamond. I am also a keen aviation enthusiast and attained a private pilot's license in 2006, something I wanted to do since I was a small child. I also love meeting new people and connecting. So if there is anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to contact me!akjones.email@yahoo.ca

    Data Science For Fun
    Self Interest 2016 - 2019
As relevant work experience projects, I am designing and writing python code for the development of a Baseball, and Ice Hockey game. The games are based on old rotisserie styled games produced by the Avalon Hill Company (Statis Pro Baseball, Statis Pro Hockey). The concept uses real-time statistics of professional players and the probability of their stats to decide the outcome of the game. Games include AI platformsOther projects include Designing Python code for the building of AI aircraft and scenery databases for Lockheed Martin’s Prepar3D and Microsoft’s Flight-simulation packages Furthermore, I am active writing Blog posts regarding data science in Hockey.

    - Wrote Python scripts for the automated acquisition of aerosol data from the NOAA (NASA) database- Designed and implemented scripts using Python and (My)SQL to produce SQL object oriented databases - Produced Python script tools (Libraries: Numpy, MatplotLib, Plotly, Pandas) for data quality purposes- Performed quality controlled machine learning assignments using Python to help better understand possible issues between inter-compared data-sets (Libraries: Numpy, MatplotLib, Pandas)- Basic GUI interface building using Python-Tkinter
  • Chalmers University Of Technology
    Data Scientist
    Chalmers University Of Technology 2015 - 2017
    Gothenburg, Sweden, Se
Data scientist and researcher, assisting work in the Global Environmental Measurements and Modelling group.- Managed a NetCDF database using MATLAB as part of a European Space Agency’s (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) for ozone to help produce zonally averaged ozone data taken from the Odin SMR instrument. - Performed analytical analyses on Bayes-forward model calculations to help improve model predictions of satellite measurements- Developed a Probability Density Function filter using Gaussian mixture models to help identify outliers for a given data-set.
  • University Of Toronto
    Post Doctoral Fellow
    University Of Toronto 2009 - 2015

    - ACE-FTS climatology projectConstructed monthly and tri-monthly zonal average climatologies for the 14 baseline species, O3, H2O, CH4, N2O, CO, NO, NO2, N2O5, HNO3, HCl, ClONO2, CCl3F, CCl2F2, and HF, measured by the ACE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS). These data sets are intended for users who wish to validate or to gain a better understanding of atmospheric models.- ACE-FTS NOy climatology budgetBuilt on the success of the climatology project, a NOy climatology was built separately using six nitrogen containing species: NO, NO2, HNO3, N2O5, ClONO2, and HNO4. This project was an extension to the climatology project.- ACE comparisons during MOHAVE campaign.Conducted a validation of ACE-FTS and ACE-MAESTRO water vapour data by comparing to coincident LIDAR measurements taken at the Table Mountain Facility on October 12-26, 2009, during the Measurements of Humidity in the Atmosphere and Validation Experiments (MOHAVE) 2009 campaign.- ACE and its involvement in SPARC-DIConstructed the ACE-FTS and ACE-MAESTRO climatologies which are players in the Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate Data Initiative. This project’s main objective was a detailed comparison of climatologies of chemical trace gas species, which identify differences between the different data sets measured by numerous satellite instruments.- Data gap bridging studyInvestigated the feasibility of using data from either a limb/occultation or nadir viewing instruments to fill a gap in the time series between the termination of the ACE mission the initiation of the proposed CASS mission. This was tested using both ozone and carbon monoxide measurements. - Validation of ACE, JEM-SMILES, and Odin SMR ozone isotopologuesIntercompared ACE-FTS, Japanese Experiment Module Superconducting subMIllimeter wave Limb-Emission Sounder (JEM-SMILES), and Odin Sub-millimetre Radiometer (SMR) ozone isotopologue in terms of volume mixing ratios as well as enrichment values.
