Working closely with a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Tony Wyss-Coray (Department of Neurology), I investigated the molecular mechanisms and cellular interactions that mediate brain aging. Completed an Honors Thesis in Biology in Spring 2017: I explored the hypothesis that brain endothelial cell crosstalk with the systemic environment causes subsequent changes in signaling that give rise to the neurodegenerative pathologies seen in aging. Specifically, I investigated VCAM1’s regulation by the aged systemic milieu and assessed its role in the age-associated decline in adult neurogenesis.Thesis Title: VCAM1 is upregulated by an aged systemic milieu and regulates hippocampalneurogenesis through brain endothelial cell-mediated interactions. May 2017 (poster presentation at Human Biology Research Exploration Symposium in 2015, and oral presentation at Biology Undergraduate Honors Research Symposium 2017).Co-author on article published by Nature Medicine (May 2019).
