GORILLAS IN HOT PANTS*That’s the subject line from one my most-replied-to work emails ever. It was a tone of voice training email sent to about 500 people at Tesco. Within minutes, my inbox was ping-ping-pinging like a bicycle bell.6 out of 7 of the directors I copied in replied too.And they were proper busy.Because it’s not just copywriters who need to be good at writing. Or at least not just copywriters who need to send emails that people will read. Especially if you want someone to do something.That’s something for everyone.And that’s partly what I love about copywriting.The power to get people to read what I write, when everyone sees hundreds of messages per day.But hold on a tick.Yes, I’m a copywriter first and foremost - and I manage 8 of them at John Lewis, where I lead the in-house copy team - but I’m also keenly sensitive to the marriage of copy and design. It’s all about the whole. If that means just two words, then those two words will count. Offline, online, above, below, through the line...if it needs words, I can write it.From retail to tech, culture to finance, pharma to world-leading flavourists - I’ve worked across a ton of different areas.B2B, B2C, SEO, CRM… REM are quite good. I love what I do. And weirdly, I love what other people do just as much. I never stop learning. Reading, absorbing. Loving, hating (a bit). Laughing. Because I just love everything about words, wordsmithing, wordery and word salad.I’ve won a lot of awards – mainly for being nice. Certainly none for being cool. Unless “brainiac uncool” is the new cool. In which case I’m nailing it. I frequently wear the jacket of my dad’s 1960s wedding suit to work. Not even joking.Lots of people I’ve worked with have been kind enough to write me a stonking recommendation below, if you’d care to have a sniff. Didn’t even have to write all of them myself and get them to go “yeah, I’m fine with that.” Nope, that definitely didn’t happen.Got any hobbies, Ashley? Yeah, got some. Music, mainly.
