Ashley Remkus is a two-time Pulitzer-winning investigative journalist minding the public's business in her home state of Alabama.In 2023, she was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting for the investigative series that exposed predatory policing in the town of Brookside. The reporting freed people from jail, prompted Alabama legislators to pass new laws and led to the traffic court judge being banned from the bench.In 2021, she was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for a yearlong investigation of police dogs and the injuries they inflict on Americans. Ashley also was part of a team nominated for a national Emmy award in 2021 for contributions to the PBS NewsHour series “Searching for Justice.”Her work has also been recognized by the the George Polk Awards, Sidney Hillman Foundation, News Leaders Association, White House Correspondents Association, Investigative Reporters and Editors, Online News Association, Society of Professional Journalists and Alabama Press Association. She appeared in the documentary State of Alabama v. Brittany Smith, which premiered on Netflix in 2022.Ashley has reported from courtrooms and crime scenes, demonstrations and dinner tables. She once ate supper in a jail as part of reporting on corruption among Alabama sheriffs. Another time she donned tactical gear to experience police K-9 training in the woods of coastal Alabama. In 2020, she reported live as police threw flash bang grenades and fired tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray at crowds of peaceful protesters, journalists and passersby in Huntsville. She writes, edits, films video, shoots photographs and appears on camera. She also reports on Snapchat and Facebook Live.She is currently the local investigative editor for AL.com, where she leads a team to report on the biggest issues facing people in their local communities.
