About Ashley Ruba, Phd
For over a decade, I worked to become a professor. I had it all: 15 first-author publications, multiple dissertation awards, and a prestigious post-doctoral fellowship.Then, in 2022, I quit.An academic career was no longer sustainable for me. I felt insecure, unappreciated, and exhausted, emotionally and physically. The only problem: Leaving academia is really hard.Even so, I had been taught that “smart” people could “figure it out” on their own. But after a while, I started feeling...…confused by endless (and outdated) “free” Internet advice, with no idea what actually worked.…frustrated after submitting dozens of resumes, only to face rejections (did recruiters even care about my PhD?)…overwhelmed by imposter syndrome, convinced that I was overqualified, underqualified, or (even worse) a failure.…isolated and ashamed to admit that I was struggling, fearing no one else understood what I was going through.After weeks of trial-and-error, I finally figured out how to land a non-academic job. I had been doing everything wrong. I fixed my mistakes, landing 4 jobs in < 8 weeks each, including at Meta (twice).When I shared my successes on social media, hundreds of PhDs asked for my help. I wasn't alone at all - so many brilliant minds were trapped in a broken system. I knew there had to be a better way to change careers.So, I founded After Academia 🌻I developed a program for PhDs who want more than titles and tenure.
