About Ashli Akins

Ashli Akins is a non-profit director, social entrepreneur, artist, and scholar from British Columbia, Canada. She currently splits her time between Canada's Pacific Northwest and Peru's Sacred Valley.She is the founder and president of Mosqoy, an international charitable organization that works with remote communities of the Peruvian Andes to mitigate adverse effects of unsustainable tourism and development by providing economic opportunities while nurturing their threatened indigenous culture. She founded Mosqoy when she was 21 years old and has since dedicated her life to it. (www.mosqoy.org) Ashli received her PhD from the University of British Columbia in interdisciplinary studies in 2022 (supervised by Dr. Wade Davis and Dr. Kai Chan, with committee members Dr. Nancy Turner and Dr. Mark Turin). Her dissertation title was: "Pampa & Pallay: the paradox of culture and economy in the Andean mountains of Peru." In 2014, Ashli received her master's in international human rights law from the University of Oxford, where she explored steps to fulfill the right to art. She graduated from the University of Victoria in 2009, with a Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies, Latin American studies, and professional writing (journalism & publishing). Ashli aims to advance human rights and environmental injustices through communications, art, advocacy, community work, and academia. Along with other contracts, she has worked with the New Zealand federal government, developing co-management strategies to support Māori communities to gain more voice regarding their harvest resources and land rights. Ashli has received many accolades for her work, including the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, the Canadian Federation of University Women's graduate scholarship, and the Oxford University Human Rights Scholarship. In her not-so-spare time, she enjoys trekking, dancing, rock-climbing, and playing the fiddle.
