About Ashling Mccarthy

I am a social development consultant, who combines a unique combination of skills in design, theoretical knowledge and practical experience, to the social development sector. As an anthropologist, and creative, in the field of social development, I focus on projects specifically aimed at social change in South Africa. Real change is possible, but requires a transformation in thinking, and more importantly, requires a human-centred approach. This means meaningfully engaging with the people we serve, understanding their contexts, wants and needs, and allowing them to participate in the process of finding solutions to the challenges they experience. Because the brain that holds the problem, most often holds the solution.

Whilst running The Scribe (2012-2015), I was fortunate enough to work on projects that I found very rewarding. However, I also discovered new areas of work that allowed me to join the fight to create meaningful social change in South Africa. Like you, I am a catalyst for the change I want to see in this country. I will be taking all I know and continue to learn as an anthropologist, a creative, and thought leader in the field of social development, and focus on projects specifically aimed at social change in South Africa. Real change is possible, but requires a transformation in thinking, and more importantly, requires a human-centred approach. This means meaningfully engaging with the people we serve, understanding their contexts, wants and needs, and allowing them to participate in the process of finding solutions to the challenges they experience. Because the brain that holds the problem, is best positioned to find the solution.

I Learn to Live – Ngifundela Ukuphila, a non-profit and public benefit organisation, believes that rural children and youth should be given an opportunity to create a meaningful life, in which they contribute towards their community, and society at large. We focus on providing school children with educational support, broadening minds and horizons with innovative and fun programmes, and teach them to value themselves and others. We believe rural youth can take hold of their future, through basic skills development, as well as providing opportunities for youth to join the world of technology, through computer programming. We believe that the brain that holds the problem, most often holds the solution. The answer to many rural challenges can be answered by our youth; our role is to provide them with opportunities, skills, and most importantly, belief, to do so.I Learn to Live – Ngifundela Ukuphila, is situated at the Ngqamuzane Support Centre in Dlangubo, Empangeni. The Scribe

At The Scribe, our passion is the story. We believe that everyone has a story to tell, although, not everyone has the ability to turn their story into a comprehensible, engaging narrative, that can be used effectively to produce intended (and positive unintended) results. We acknowledge that there is a time and a place for the verbal telling of a story - in a meeting or in a documentary. But, sometimes that story needs to be presented in a digestible, engaging and usable product, which creates a history or archive of ideas and action plans. We believe:•That a well told story can lead to increase in businesses, whether it is increased product sales or donor funding.•That behind the WHAT of every company, lies the WHY – and this needs to be expressed clearly and creatively.•That by giving those who are historically voiceless in our communities the opportunity to tell their story, that we can help facilitate change in communities and give people a voice. The Scribe offers services in the following areas:Writing services:As a writing company, The Scribe has the unique vantage point of being both well versed in research and writing. This enables us to apply a far more in-depth and critical approach to writing. Our writing projects benefit greatly from the wealth of experience and knowledge that research provides.Training Services:The Scribe understands the value of equipping staff to perform well and feel confident about their work - especially in the field of social development research. Our two main areas of training include fieldwork and writing for the work place. As researchers, we value well-trained fieldworkers, who collect the data that ultimately guides the way forward in the programme development. -Specialities:Anthropological Research, Qualitative Research, Applied Research, Content and Research, Company and Project Profiling, Annual Reports, Training Material, Infographic
